Leonard Cohen concert?

Post by sulis »

Its probably been asked a million times on this forum, but is there any chance Leonard Cohen will do a concert tour this year? Especially in the UK?

I ask because I just got caught out not checking the Echo and the Bunnymen forum for a few weeks, not only did I miss their concert this December in Liverpool, but also failed to get a ticket for their London concert next September, already sold out. If Leonard is going to do a concert, I want a ticket before they sell out.

I know the feeling. The Tiger Lillies were in Montreal just a little while ago and I knew they were coming for about 6 months but when the time was close I forgot and missed them

Or especially in Barcelona (or 1000 Km around). I can't stand thinking if I will not get the tickets.

I know the feeling too I understand and share this worry for to see him again. At the same time I wonder for what reason these things are so complicated. I know that the Cohen's name is very big and a tour must be prepared carefully, but sometimes I think that everything might be more natural.

I know that they are different singers, but often Georges Moustaki plays in the wonderful and modernist Palau de la Mùsica Catalana, where Cohen played for the first time in Barcelona in 1974.

Moustaki has got the same age that Cohen, 73 years old, appears in the stage with fragile aspect, is tall and thin, has an older voice, but it is an extraordinary experience. An exciting union exists between the dear singer and his public. It is the satisfied desire to pay tribute.

I remember at the end of Cohen's concert in Barcelona in 1988, when already we knew that there were no any more encore, Leonard launched to the public a military greeting, I raised my hand as to gather it. Oh! I would like to repeat this gesture.

Yes, Toni, I also like your words, and I also love Georges Moustaki. I've been listening to Moustaki for many years and some of my favourites are "Le Meteque", "Ma Solitude", "Il y avait un jardin" and "Ma Liberte". He's a beautiful man and a great musician and especially an outstanding songwriter. Unfortunately his music is not available in my country, but I bought a few albums in Cape Town.

How I envy all you people who through the years were able to see these fine artists performing live! For me these dreams will never come true, but at least I can listen to them every day of my life.

Best wishes to you all for 2008.

Hi Gerrida ~

Do you think you'll be able to fly somewhere to see Leonard?

Hi Lizzy,

No, I don't think so. We have a lot of problems getting visas in our country, of which time is the most important. I could manage to visit Europe three times in the past but it takes months to organize your trip and get everything in place. For instance our nearest airport is Windhoek, about 700 km north of our farm; to get a visa for the USA you have to go to Cape Town which is some 900 km to the south. Of course nothing is impossible and many people from here do travel overseas but for me it has become very difficult as I'm not that young and adventurous anymore.

All the best.

Hi Gerrida ~

So you need a visa to make the trip? All we need is our passport. At least if we just want to fly to and from a single place. Even so, once in Europe, I was able to fly other places without a visa... maybe they have to do with how long/for what purpose you intend to be in a grouping of countries? What you've described sounds daunting, but it would be so wonderful if you could somehow manage to see Leonard just once.

Yes, Lizzy, it would be lovely, but on the other hand, what would I say to a man such as Leonard Cohen? I guess I would be totally speechless!

Being a Namibian I need a Schengen visa to visit some countries in Europe; this you can obtain from an embassy in Windhoek. For Switzerland you need a special visa from their embassy in Cape Town. The travel agencies usually are very helpful but it does take a few weeks because you have to send your passport and hope you get it back in time. For the USA you must travel to Cape Town and apply for your visa in person. In all circumstances they want a full itinerary and even proof of payment for your first night's accommodation in the country of arrival. You can get your foreign travel allowance at any bank in Namibia, but first you must submit your flight ticket, which you would only buy after you've got your visa.....

Thinking of all this I'd rather stay at home and watch Leonard's DVDs. Even though I really would love see him and just look in his eyes for a minute. One must accept that some things in life just are not meant to be.

All the best to you,
