OMG! Will someone [Anne/Yankovic/Jarkko] please pass this info along with the NOW NEW-TOTAL number of KNOWN covers of Hallelujah on to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame?? It bears mentioning by someone, somewhere along the way, in the ceremonies.

Amazing.
This has to be one of the best songs written, ever.
I was watching 'Scrubs' last night (a TV series) and on comes John Cale singing, "Hallelujah" during a poignant montage.

If this is too impolite to ask, just tell me...But I'm curious, does Leonard get residuals from this song and/or melody or were they signed away? It is painful to think he might not have the rights to this masterpiece...and not being paid for its use...

...the "Sad Kermit" version is, I'm pretty sure, a take on Jeff Buckley's take on Leonard's song.

Laurie, you'll be happy, not sad like Kermit, to know that, indeed, Leonard Cohen does receive financial benefits from the usages of Hallelujah (and his other songs); every artist who records Hallelujah for release, pays about $0.08 mechanical royalties for each CD pressed that contains the song recording. As the numbers grow into the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions, this can be very nice for a writer. And, the "synch" licenses for using the song in tv shows and movies can amount to significant (eg. tens of thousands of dollar) per each placement. Such monies would result in some sort of publishing split.

The great compositions of Leonard Cohen will continue to reward him financially, as they are discovered and recorded anew.

Good to see you here. I think Laurie's question related to Hallelujah's being sold out from under Leonard via Kelley Lynch. I was wondering the same thing and it seems he may not be getting anything.

I'm not so sure the 'act' of selling Hallelujah was surreptitiously done by Lynch. The taking of monies by her that were to be used as LC's retirement fund however has been well documented.

What I was referring to was when she sold the copyright rights/royalty rights [or however that would be properly said] to groups [catalogues?] of Leonard's songs, of which "Hallelujah" I believe would have been one. Or am I being a revisionist here, i.e. recalling history wrongly?

I could be wrong, and, I have not read much about the issues since the news of the sad situation first broke, but, what I recall from that time was that allegations were centred on $ millions belonging to Leonard Cohen disappearing through misappropriation etc. The collection of royalties and publishing fees etc. should still be intact - and, providing the monies collected in the past year or two, and from hereon, don't go sideways, then, LC will stand to build up a healthy amount of capital from all the cover recordings etc. of Hallelujah and the other songs in his catalogue.

Seems to me, his loss was of a different nature to, say, Van Morrison, or countless other recording artists, who've had their publishing stolen from them by crooked managers, labels etc. etc.

I purposely tried to not hang onto too many sordid details...but...my puny recollection is that Leonard had sold the rights many of his songs (Hallelujah being one of them) in anticipation that that transaction would result in a goodly part of his retirement funds...Then Lynch pilfered the money....I really don't think, at least in the case of Hallelujah that he has retained 'rights.' It's horrible!

Liz: She could, I suppose have sold rights to some stuff without his knowledge, but it seems there was a major transaction (Hallelujah, etc) that was done with Leonard's full knowledge...

I could be completely wrong. I am definately completly not comfortable with the subject.

Ouch! I've been thinking that, at least, Leonard would be able to rebuild a nest-egg through his publishing. If it has been sold off, and the proceeds pilfered, it's even sadder than I'd imagined.

I think of Van Morrison - who will never perform "Brown Eyed Girl" - one of the most played songs in the history of recorded music. He's never received a penny for that song (and others in his early catalogue).

Here's hoping Leonard is not so divorced from enjoying the financial rewards of his creations.
