Exquisite Corpse

Post by Manna »

Let's do an exquisite corpse. I'll write the first line. Let me know by PM if you want to play. The first one to PM me will get my line. Then that person will PM me his or her line, and I'll send that line alone on to the next person. I'll keep up the volley until interest dies. The more the merrier.

I don't see much chance of the "more" part growing much merrier without there being some clues along the way to remind people that this is going on, that it is like a swell fun party that we are all invited to.
As one of the participants who has received and sent a line, I would like to say, golly, that sure was fun.
I sure do hope my line was nice and straight and clear and true and doesn't cause anyone to take twisted turns of demented thought.
Maybe you should make some rules for participation Manna or maybe there are some already that you haven't told us. Here are some suggestions:

Has to rhyme with the line before
Has to have a certain number of syllables
No words that can be taken to have a sexual meaning
No naughty words
Must use words that everyone understands
and is meant in a way that everyone understands

can someone suggest any other rules?

Not really, Jack... though a list of people intended to participate would be nice... just so potentials know they haven't boarded the life raft alone and it might encourage others to join. I've already done it, and mine didn't rhyme with the line before  , nor have a specified number of syllables; though it did sound 'poetic' and had relevant meaning.

if we make a rule that your line has to rhyme with the line before, the entire poem will have end rhymes - the same end rhyme. That may be fun, unless the ending of the first line is a rhyme-poor word.
I sure do hope my line was nice and straight and clear and true and doesn't cause anyone to take twisted turns of demented thought.
I hope it DOES cause some twisted demented thought.

Jack, what the dick are you doing? You're taking all the funk out of it!! Not to mention all the reberphromp!!

NO RULES!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

OK, so far participants are me, Lizzy, Damellon (hope you don't mind me exposing you), & Jack, in that order.
Hey, why not ask for more?

where are you Jimmy, where are you Adam, where are you John & Mickey (actually, I know where you are, hope you're having a good time down there!), where are you Laurie?

The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.
Was the first line of the first time this game was played. That is why it is called Exquisite Corpse.

The reason I found that out was because the name interested me.

Wordsworth in speaking about poetry once made the comment that "To dissect is to kill" and to that he got a strong rebuke from T.S.Eliot who replied that it is the poem that we have in front of us and not the poet and in many important ways the poem is already dead. Eliot was of the opinion that a poem should be examined with all the resources that are available, without concern that anything will be lost by doing so.

Interesting dichotomy between two renowned poets. Did they carry their discourse further or just leave it with those polarities?

It was a long time ago that I came across that. I don't even remember where I read it. Sorry that I can't give you more info.

I think, Lizzy, it would have been difficult for Wordsworth and T S Eliot to carry their discourse any further - unless they did so beyond the grave! Which they still be doing.

Haha, William. I've never studied poetry or the lives of poets, so they're probably from different centuries; even though others could have used quotations by them to construct a 'discourse' of sorts. However, I can't hide behind that because it's not what I was thinking ~ this wording gave me the wrong impression and I didn't think beyond their both being well known, like when they had lived  :
and to that he got a strong rebuke from T.S.Eliot who replied
I guess T.S. Eliot took issue with something read in a book.

Are you joining us in the Exquisite Corpse, William 8) ?
