Hi PBShel ~

In retrospect, it's ironic that until now I had been taking you to be a woman. Seriously.

Hi PBShel ~

You seem to be feeling down today and I'm sorry to see that, though I do understand. From my perspective, being great isn't what life is all about. Doing the best we can is though. I can't think of a single thing I'm great at... but I still try to do my best and know I don't always do that... [not that it wouldn't be nice to be great at something, but not every one achieves "greatness" and that's okay, too]. Financial times also keep all of our jobs on edge. Every media broadcast today proves it.

After too many things got in the way, I didn't even try for my master's... and you got accepted into a PhD program. Good on you ~ and to me, that's great! Your attempt to obtain a PhD is one of the ways that shows that you care about improving yourself. What happened after that sounds related to life itself. You're still able to come here and talk about it and that's great!

You sound like a good person who cares about how he moves through life; even if your walk hasn't been perfect, you try. That's what most of us do, PBShel. We do our best. We try. Your stopping drinking was a major accomplishment and shows that you care about your walk. One of the things that a woman, whom I really admired, once said [in 1975, in a conversation about how she is] that stuck with me... and I've found it to be true was that [very close paraphrasing], "No matter how 'cool' you think someone is or they appear to be, if you really get to know them, you find out that they're just as f****d up as everyone else; because in one way or another we all are." It was a great equalizer. She hung out with a lot of attorneys and other professionals, as well as a lot of people who weren't. Everyone loved her and she wasn't intimidated by anyone. She was outgoing, genuinely warm, and loving with everyone she met.

You quit drinking because of being inspired by three great poets. How many people can say that, PBShel? You also have a very interesting mind with regard to history and politics. Your contributions here are always well-informed and insightful. You could afford to give up smoking, and what smoker couldn't? When I quit in 1975, I was smoking four packs a day. If I can, you can.

You seem to have had a dicey, few last days here. With your poem, for me, my understanding would be helped if you decapitalized the words that normally wouldn't be... and maybe broke it into two stanzas. Your last line [because of the realms my own career has taken me into] evokes child molestation. I don't know if that's how it's intended, but ending your poem with it just leaves me with that impression. I like the way you contrast boulder and pebble. The true weight of a work vs. some people's disregard for it... or, perhaps, how easily they're able to digest it? I'm not sure, PBShel, but would appreciate a little reworking so I could understand your poem better.

Thanks.
