Comp. poem 11 Comments welcome

Post by mickey_one »

That's right, it's comes to this

I see I've made the 'most wanted' list again
At 73, what are the odds on that?
Coming armed with my words
Forcing you to think, to feel.
And what did I rob?
Your sighs, your tears, your desires.

It's not for myself I do it,
my lifestyle is modest, my dreams realised.
In fact, I could do with a rest
From writing and singing and drawing.
Just being gets to be enough,
But there's Anjani.

I LOVE the way you've taken the conceptual view of robbery with Leonard's 'crimes that are mine.' It doesn't rhyme in the traditional way, but it still works! And your Anjani line ~ haha. I love that! Quite a bit of truth going on there 8) . You're kinda quoting Leonard's own comment in the Norwegian interview, about, "Well, then there's Anjani," or something close to that [to which she sweetly and humourously responds in the interview, "Yeah, but I don't eat much."] Just mentioning her in your poem gives her creedence. To think of him turning to a life of crime to support her... is funny... but the crimes that were mine [his] are all in your first stanza... then he really HAS devoted more 'criminal acts' to helping Anjani [which some consider a crime]. I think it's very consistent and very positive.

I'm glad you won. I feel you should own up to it :D . Now... repent and confess!

Nice~!!!

Very introspective with a casual-matter-of-fact, spoken-word tone. It is quite sad, without being manipulative. Interesting take on what was reflexively a 'funny' premise.

mickey_one - I won't make it to the Barbican. If there's no chance of a video link, would you like to go proxy for me on 20th October, at the readings in the Green Note Cafe? If Manna didn't use the 5 string to trash the hotel room (so went Mat J's third place prize of $1000) you could collect my prize as well. I shall wear my red bra that day and if you still have yours from Hydra, in the closet, and are willing to sport it one more time, we could synchronise. Looks like Pete was the real winner (good man)- he gets to go greyhound racing with Leonard! Cheers.

Pssst, Dam, are you still awake? Everyone's gone. Whadda you say we blow this joint for the night? Jimmy's right, it's beyond the sea. And there's a great jazz band playin' in town tonight with Clint Eastwood's son. Dunno what he looks or sounds like but we can check him out. You can come too, Jimmy. Might help get rid of your prickle. Joney, how about you? Since you're on the lookout. And Dam really needs to hand over that 'total bastard' crown of thorns tonight. Lizzy, are you there? Wanna come? I think RPoppy might still have some pudding left (not sure what kind), Joney's bringing the coconuts and Pete's got a hard to open packet of 1973 vintage homemade soup. Should be pretty tasty. And if we're really lucky, we can have some of Byron's lumpy rice pud for dessert.

On my way, Christine. Ninety miles or 6,000 miles, roundtrip, for decent entertainment; it's all the same to me... and I can get there just about as fast. I'll bring the glasses.

Perfecto, Lizzy. And while I always suck at the food thing, you can always count on me for fabulous drinks. So the wine will be open ready for your arrival. And I've got plenty of Advil for the morning. Believe me, with my Bloody Mary's and a handful of those, there's no such thing as a hangover here. Oh, I got my first dole check today (not bad) and I'm expecting my severance and final expense checks next week so life is good. Anyway, gotta run out for an hour or so.... back soon. Would you mind keepin' watch in case anyone shows up? Everyone's welcome.

How about a little salad with the wine for later, Christine? Salads are my favourite for making and since I flew all this way, it'll keep me busy and awake  until you get back. I've heard that taking aspirin just before sleeping works. Any truth to that?

Dole, severance, and expense checks, plus a holiday. You're making this sound like a good deal 8) . Yes... I'll watch the door for more :) .

Monarch Watch

Post by Christine »

That was a luverly salad, thanks Lizzy. This has nothing to do with the thread but I've been seeing a few Monarchs in the garden recently and so I've been trying to find out where best to see them during their migration. Have you been in one before? When I lived in Tahoe, I was in (and you are in them) the midst of two migrations. It's one of the most incredibly beautiful sights you'll ever see. Makes you weep.

It's hard to imagine how such fragile wings can carry them up to 3,000 miles to their overwintering spots. They still don't know how the monarchs find the same sites to hibernate in winter since the butterflies that return have never been to the site. But they believe it's tied to the magnetic pull of the earth, the position of the sun and other directional aids.

Looks like the migration's begun and they're heading your way....

PS Advil (best) and a pint of water before bed works famously.
