Summer Solstice, George Hotel.

Post by Andrew McGeever »

Summer Solstice, George Hotel.

Tonight's a rite of passage.
I see you in a different light:
that shoulderless dress of blue,
and hair so classically Greek.

My dazzling daughter: you have danced
since you could walk, and raced through school
with confidence and too much talk!

The future's yours, yet pause; survey
the teachers gathered at the ball.
From all those has-beens, I'd be glad
if you would dance with your loving Dad.

I love your tender poem for your daughter, Andrew.

It's nice to see you here after so long.

Summer Solstice, George Hotel was published in The Herald last Saturday......"Poem Of The Day".
The Poetry Editor, Lesley Duncan, quoted me in her preamble.....

" The summer school term is over, but Andrew McGeever's description of a sixth-year leavers' ball is a pleasantly poignant perspective on an event that took place "in posh venues throughout Scotland" last month. He adds "It's not for parents, but the teachers attend, and encouraged to do so. On this occasion, one of the teachers happens to be the father of the depute head girl...This poem wrote itself".

Andrew.

P.S. Thanks for the reply, Lizzy, but have I been away for so long? I posted in June, and it's only July, just !
