Maria Callas

Post by lizzytysh »

I'm feeling a kind of heartbroken-ness from the news that Maria Callas has died of a heart attack in Paris at age 53! She had told a friend this past summer that she had concerns regarding her health. Anyone who loves opera, which I do, I think can relate to how I'm feeling  . Such a loss to the world of opera and to the world, with the loss of her magnificent voice and presence. NPR is doing lengthy and befitting coverage of her death and her life, with many examples of her incredibly-ranged, phenomenally-beautiful, exquisite voice [and delivery]. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all who are experiencing her loss  . A tragic loss. So many years of her own life and future song are now disappeared.

I don't get this? The only Maria Callas I know (Maria Kalegoropoulos alias Maria Callas) was born in 1923 in New York and died on September 16 1977 in Paris. Her website is at http://www.callas.it

I don't get it either, then, Jarkko....except to say that they must have decided to do a retrospective of her on the anniversary of her birth [1923 ~ now 2003]? All of the commentary was in present tense. There can only be one Maria Callas. I learned of her in the early 60s and have recordings of her. I guess the Saturday afternoon, Metropolitan Opera broadcasts that I listen to with her singing are recordings from long past....and so much time has passed that they don't bother talking about her no longer being around. In 1977, my life had [since 1971] taken a dramatic turn, to where I had only my recordings, listening to nothing on the radio, so as bizarre as it may sound, I have missed all references to her death. I have a lasting image of her beauty, and you know how that is, as you grow older, you tend to forget that people age, and that she would no longer look like that [i.e. be that age] this many years later. I was just shocked to hear about it, and I didn't make the conceptual leap that 53, though near my age now, would not have made her so near my age then.

So, my long-past-due condolences remain. Thanks for your clarification and correction. Had no idea I'd get the chance to apologize for misinformation so soon  ~ divine providence.

Oh no he isn't. He lives next door to my aunty's cousin's vet, and he works in the local fish and chip shop!

Hey, Partisan.....not totally now  ....it does remain that Maria Callas is dead, as noted. However, being more than 25 years off on the date could be a problem  . It also remains that we will [now ex-post-facto, as well] miss out on years of incredible song. I certainly mean no disrespect to Maria with all this.

I am thinking of sending this thread to "Does the panel think" and if they do how can you tell and should they be allowed to

This is one of my all time favourite threads I think there should be some sort of "pop chart" of threads. This make me cry with laughter :D

I won't argue with you on that, Paula  , on its hilarity. However, using it as the acid test for thinking abilities, I'd have to say one's milking it for all it's worth.....a Dairy Farmer's tactic, in fact. Even so, I related it to another person who is aware of Maria Callas [I dare say there are a number here who aren't even that] and they were equally shocked as I by the "news." I guess it's along the lines of hearing of the death of an old classmate, when you've been in arenas where you reasonably should have but didn't, as it just never came up. Well, it certainly came up today, and I'm still not clear as to why. However, for the window of time that I was absent from such news, I am still expressing my long-after-the-fact sorrow that Maria was taken at such a young age.

Surreal......yes.
