Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchel, and I know he mentioned some other names few times.

Leonard at Leisure
When it comes to lamentations
I prefer Aretha Franklin
to, let's say, Leonard Cohen
Needless to add, he hears a different drum
-- LC [from somewhere in DEATH OF A LADY'S MAN]

... and, of course, his hobnobbing with both Lou Reed and Iggy Popp are well-known (whether or not that indicates an affinity for their music) -- I believe I also once saw a photo of him backstage with Devo.

Having spotted that Leonard likes to listen to Tom Waits, I had not heard any of his music, so just recently I looked in the music stores and found so many albums I didn't know what to choose. I have now downloaded several albums through WINMX and am totally knocked out. He is amazingly talented and has a wicked sense of humour, and a voice like a drunk Louis Armstrong with laryngitis. Some of his albums are quite bizarre and there's a wide variation in style over the years. To anyone who hasn't heard him, give him a hearing.

I absolutely adore Tom Waits and have several of his CDs. If anyone does want an intro to his work I would recommend the Compilation Early Years originally on Vinyl but on CD released as Volume 1 & Volume 2.
Probably my all time fave TW album would be Heart of Saturday Night followed by Franks Wild Years and Swordfish Trombones as time has gone by his voice has got deeper and huskier, it gives me hope that someday people may pay to hear me sing.
JTS (Heartily recommends Tom Waits)

JTS here's a thought that you and Georges might appreciate. I too have discovered Tom Waits and I get the feeling that the best way I can describe his voice and LC's is to say that, LC's voice is like Draught Guinness, while Tom Wait's voice is like bottled Guinness. The Irish fraternity will know just how different those 2 Guinnesses are. The Draught is smoother yet still has plenty of old fashioned bite, whilst the Bottled stuff hits you with an immediate impact. Constant top-ups of all four, improve with the years.

"Bipolar is a roller-coaster ride without a seat belt. One day you're flying with the fireworks; for the next month you're being scraped off the trolley" I said that.
