The Nest

Post by Sarry »

The Nest

I've searched beyond myself you know
I've climbed the tallest tree
To look inside the flicker's nest
But he's taken away the key
The days are cold, my heart grows old
Frost lingers in my hair
And this bird of hope has flown away
With my heart that was so fair
So I sit apon that heavy branch
And stare into the nest
My fingers probing through it now
For my soul that needs some rest.

The day is done, my battle's lost
My person is no more
It's flying high with that little bird
To a place that has a door
Where children laugh and lovers weep
With their passion running free
Where they go and dance right through the door
That my tears won't let me see
Oh little bird come back to me
I'm looking for you in the sky
Just one more time, please check your nest
Or else I'll truly die.

If only I could find you
If only you could care
But your heart should never really know
The pain it wants to share

It's getting dark, the branch is wet
The wind begins to call
But I'm still alone with empty hands
I'm frightened I might fall
Oh little bird you are so cruel
Why don't you wait for me ?
I'm only small but I'll do my best
Can no one out there see ?
What does it take; just name your price
For one small heart of tin
It won't be missed, you have so much
But without it I will sin.

I'm climbing down, it is no use
From this tree so dark and bold
I shiver and curl up on it's leaves
Like my heart, so moist and cold
I'm out of tears as I try to cry
For all that I have lost
The ones I loved with all my heart
The ones that shared the cost
Of knowing me in the days that I
Went dancing in the sun
And laughed right to the devil's face
Now look what he has done.

If only I could find you
If only you could care
But your heart should never really know
The pain it wants to share.

The tree is still and the night is long
I shake beneath the nest
I have no coat, oh I am so cold
As the icicles pierce my breast
Oh loving friends, look down on me
Tomorrow from the sun
Please love me as I lie there still
Forgive me all I've done
And if my body moves and I get up
Don't come and hold me tight
Because I've lost my tiny heart of tin
That I fought for with all my might

Go away and find a better place
Where women's hearts don't grow old
Where no one's ever heard of tin
Where all you'll find is gold
Keep walking now, don't even stop
To look back down at me
Just walk with pride so straight and tall
To a place where love is free
And if you see that little bird
Above you in the sky
Lock up your heart and hide the key
So your heart will never die.

If only I could find you
If only you could care
But your heart should never really know
The pain that it will bear.
Smiles cost extra (Cohen)
