Carthy and the Swarb

Post by Pete »

Had a real treat the other night.
Found out that Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick were appearing up the road in Chesterfield so we went along. What a great evening :D

Only about 80 in the audience althought this meant it was quite full. Martin Carthy's passion for folk music made it all come alive.
Talking about 'alive' .. it was so good to see Dave Swarbrick. A few years ago he was in a wheelchair and having to have an oxygen mask (emphysema) but he had a double lung transplant in 2004 and is now up and about... he's not 100% but I guess he's a damned sight better than what he was. His fiddle playing was awesome. The guitar and fiddle together with Carthy's distinct voice made it a magical evening.....and they've just brought out a cd , which I just had to buy at the interval and made them sign it :-)
BTW
The Daily Telegraph mistakenly published Swarbricks obituary when he was ill. The Swarb was happy to be alive to read it!!!

Just thought I'd share this with you for you trad folk fans out there

I have just ordered this new album 'Straws in the Wind'- So you must be one of the very first to hear it, Pete.I agree, Carthy & Swarbrick are magical together. I haven't managed to see them live since Swarbrick's operation but let's hope it gives him a whole new lease of life.
I remember seeing him receive the 'lifetime achievement award' in 2004 in the TV broadcast of the BBC 2 Folk Music Awards.
I also recall the event of his premature obituary when Dave was seriously ill in hospital in his home town of Coventry. Apparently he remarked, 'It's not the first time I've died in Coventry'.

as you can see...Martin Carthy is a very busy man and judging from this list is appearing here there and everywhere (including the USA) either solo or with the Watersons or with Swarbrick.

Don't know if they are apperaing at a venue near you Davido. They actually played all the songs from Straws in the Wind. Dave Swarbrick joked that if they made a few mistakes then you could hear the perfect version by buying the cd..of which there was continually reminding us that they are on sale at the interval and at the end........ actually, I don't think they did make one mistake.

Oh damn and blast! I checked the program of a music venue in Birkenhead and found I missed them. They were near me on September 13 :(

I remember seeing them at Lincoln Folk Festival in 1971 a magical experience but the icing on the cake for me was the Byrds, James Taylor and Steeleye Span I love Steeleye Span.
