Tom Russell/Alejandro Escovedo

Post by Kush »

Two new CDs from the Austin music scene are superb. I have Tom Russell's new CD 'Love and Fear' and its his best since Borderland. Edgy folk, outstanding lyrics as usual and produced by Gurf Morlix.
Plus an outtake from this CD was a cover of 'Tower of Song' which was released as a single.

I have heard clips of Alejandro Escovedo's CD 'The Boxing Mirror' and heard a lot about his writing abilities so it will be my next purchase. This is more rock oriented.

Hi Kush,

Thanks for letting us know about Tom Russell's new cd. I had no idea he had one. I love love love "The Man From God Knows Where". Tom Russell is a relative of one of our Cohen cronies, Tom Bohan (page 2 in the Gallery) from my home state, Maine, who never comes here, or to chat, but who goes to all the Events. Tom was the first Cohenist I ever met, in '98 or some time around there. Anyway, I'm gonna check out the new cd.

Thanks again, Kush!

Hi Bobbie.....IMHO his earlier CD Borderland is better than The Man From God Knows Where. In between he had some indifferent ones but he's back to form with this new one.
And I've just ordered the cover of Tower of Song single from Hightone records.

Tom Russell has an interesting history - a degree in criminology from LA, he taught in Nigeria, drove a cab in Queens, DJed in Vancouver i think and now lives in El Paso.
Please tell Tom Bohan to say Hi to Tom Russell for me :)

So we dance on through the seasons
Worn out marionettes
God will cut the strings one day
but he aint cut 'em yet
The carnival is leaving town
Au revoir, Pinocchio
The witholding of affections
is the oldest circus trick we know.
