Jazzfest Webcast

Post by Squidgy »

On Sunday, April 30 from 2 pm to 7 pm
and again on Sunday, May 7 from 2 pm to 7 pm
tune in to
http://msnvideo.com/jazzfest

That link doesn't look right to me. Seems like there should be a www. in there, too, but that's the link sent to me in an email. You might try it both ways. The email didn't say whether eastern, central, or Pacific time, either. I'd assume New Orleans time, central, and adjust from there. The email said Springsteen's performance would be included in the webcast, though he's not actually scheduled to perform until after 7 pm.
Whatever. If I get any more accurate news, I'll try and post it. But hey, me & Lizzy are gonna BE THERE, so don't count on it !! 8)

Squidgy...thanks for the info. I did catch about 20 minutes of it mostly Dave Matthews and 1 song of Springsteen. Terrific. I was there in spirit. It felt good. Modern technology rocks.

Yes, cheers Squidgy. I am watching the recording from last night of Bruce singing his version of How can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live, right at this moment. Fantastic. You are right about modern technology Kush. But, still, there's nothing like being there...

There's a nice article on CNN and a better video more close up (click on Watch Springsteen let loose) although the sound is not as good.

From the text in your link, Kush:
Though they were decades old, many of the songs seemed particularly relevant to New Orleans struggles -- "Mary Don't You Weep," "Jacob's Ladder," and particularly "My Oklahoma Home," which depicts a man's loss of his home and family after the devastating dust storms there in the 1930s.

But perhaps no song was as bittersweet as "We Shall Overcome." As Springsteen somberly performed the tune, some people embraced each other, others dabbed their eyes. Another emotional moment came as he dedicated one of his old tunes to New Orleans: "My City in Ruins." Though he wrote it for his favorite town of Asbury Park, New Jersey, its lyrics resonated with the crowd: "Young men on the corner, like scattered leaves, the boarded up windows, the hustlers and thieves, while my brother's down on his knees. My city of ruins."

By the time he sang the chorus, "Come on rise up!" the audience spontaneously rose their hands in their air, symbolizing the pain and the hope of the city.
This is great to read. I'm sure it was amazing to share in the energy of this New Orleans event. The power of music, huh?

The healing power of music is so right, Diane... and you're equally right that the webcast, as great as it is, doesn't hold a candle to the immediacy and presence of seeing and hearing it in person. Bruce's compilation and emoting of his songs were just unbelievably powerful. So were those of others. His performance and the Jazzfest as a whole were breathtakingly incredible and overwhelmingly awesome. The energy of rise-up healing was everywhere. Tears came to Johanna, to me, and to others whenever the plight of New Orleans and its people were mentioned. I knew when I would see Johanna's reddening eyes and when I turned to look, I was right without fail. Of course, I don't even live there; but I feel the impact of what's gone down there and my own tears were part of the healing that I saw and felt all round. I Am SO GLAD I WENT. More later when I have time.

Love,
Lizzy

Hi Lizzy,

Thanks for that description. It's good to hear that you are back safely. I'm glad you went too, both to experience the music, and be part of that healing. Wonderful :D !!

Love,

Diane

Ah but I was speaking very personally for myself above. Having been to Jazzfest 2003-05 with friends from college and having seen Dave Matthews & Band strut their stuff over there it felt good and reminded me of the special and familiar feeling. I'll be there next year.

So will I 8) .

It's true that seeing footage can bring the reality of it all right back.

Hi Diane :D ~

Ah, yes, I'm back and safely... but my heart is still in New Orleans. I guess it'll come along and join me in its own time, but right now, it's rather busy remembering :D .

The good, the bad, the ugly, the sublime ~ all of it ~ that trip was one well worth the financial sacrifice.

I 'just' missed a tremendous photo. Have to have your camera out and in the moment. A fully rounded, rather heavy-set black guy, just there watching Hugh Masakela, standing near me... a white guy dressed totally in shreds of torn, white, cotton cloth [head to toe ~ even covering his face ~ Mardi Gras style] came up at some point and they started dancing together to the music. Danced and danced and danced... when the music ended, they embraced... a long, very long, healing hug. I'd gotten photos of them dancing together, but had put my camera away before the music ended. By the time I realized I wanted a photo of their, at that point, long hug, and had retrieved my camera and gotten it in place, their hug had just ended. The white guy in white was facing me, eyes closed, so it wasn't that he saw a photo was about to be taken. It was all just a matter of timing. They either already knew each other ~ or knew they were both from New Orleans.

If you gotta be away from the Forum, something like this is one of the best reasons [that, going to see my Mom in Michigan, and a Cohen gathering].

Love,
Lizzy

Lizzy, the picture you paint of those guys dancing is great. Pity about the missed 'hug photo', but I guess sometimes you just have to be content to let your memory take the picture...

Thanks for that info Kush! Lizzy, I will record that broadcast, and copy for you, Kush, and whoever else wants a copy.

Good night,

Diane :D

Diane thanks for the offer but dont worry about making a copy for me.
I watch DVD/videos couple of times and then they accumulate dust moreover I dont have a TV anymore. But I appreciate the offer very much. The Boss rules!

OK Kush, it will probably be on the bbc website anyway.

Here's a review of the concert last night in Manchester:
http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/ente ... _page.html
...the show was moving and fantastically impressive.
Why aren't we surprised?
