Something very silly
Something very silly
Don't read on if you only like your stuff to be serious. About 15 years ago I went with my family to Greece for a holiday and my daughter and I walked aroud for the two weeks going 'Hey he looks like Leopnard Cohen and falling about in laughter. This irritated my wife no end, just as when we were in France we would go 'Tis I, Le Clerc' (an English joke) and it was probably one of the reason why we divorced. Anyway I was on the cross channel ferry to France just before Christmas with my second wife and family and it was about 530am and we were sitting down to breakfast. I looked across and there sitting at a table by himself was Leonard's double! I didn't say anything because I love my present wife. After a few minutes she leant over to me and whispered, 'Have you seen Leonard Cohen.'
glyn
glyn, these days there is a lot of snow here in Croatia, and Zagreb is in total collaps. And yesterday I listen radio, and this happened: "11 o'clock news. The country is collapsed. Trains and aeroplanes are under the snow. City transport in Zagreb doesn't work. You can't go on road. If the government vote for new law about workers, the sindicate tells that there will be general strike. That were news." And then "Everybody Knows" started, and run complete for 6 minutes, and I felt like Doomsday is coming:-)
There is a very very clever and funny DJ on that radio station!:-)
Regards:-)

Glyn - was it him? Did you see Nevermind the Buzzcocks the other evening there was a man in the line up who someone thought looked like Leonard and he looked nothing like him.
Tom - London at present is beautiful it is covered in a white blanket. I have never heard any of Leonard music on the radio over here. It just doesn't get air time it never has. Zagreb transportation sounds pretty much like British Rail and London Transport. In fact the whole picture sounds pretty much like Britian at the moment. Still the good news is war seems to be receding.

In book "Leonard Cohen in his own words" there is a big picture of Dustin Hoffman - I said "he really looks like him" (I mean Leonard), and then there was small print on the picture: This is of course Dustin Hoffman. You've got me, Jim Devlin!:-)
Paula, I was thinking yesterday how actually I am happy living in country where is normal to have Cohen on radio. I hear him at least once in every week... At Monday I heard In My Secret Life also; 2 songs in 2 days... In My Secret Life was firts at radio chart during September and October 2001.
So, was it Leonard?:-)

Glyn - I'll take that as a "no" then
Was this geezer buying duty frees. The thought of him on a cross channel ferry is quite interesting.
Tom I can never ever recall hearing Leonard on any British mediums aside from the very rare times when he is touring and he was promoting the tour. Maybe some other Briton has but I certainly didn't get to like him thru British airtime. That is the reason he is not as popular here as the rest of Europe.
It would be nice if they played him once a year but they don't

In the mid 80's I bought a car.
It cost more than I could afford and it already had quite a number of miles on the clock and I always wondered why the digits were never in line. I realised a few months later that it had probably been clocked i.e. the milometer had been illegally reversed a few thousand miles.
The back wing had also been resculptured and had probably had an argument with another car but this was not visible to my untrained eye at the time.
It was a Ford Escort Mk3 and a vast improvement on my rusty mark2. It could also go faster than anything I had driven before, especially my very first car, a Daf 44 with the infamous rubber bands.
Anyway, I digress.
I picked up my 'new' car from the garage and drove it onto the main road and immediately tested the radio....
'Dance me to the End of Love' was on the radio.I don't know what station as I hadn't had chance to tune or test the stations.
Leonard Cohen singing to me in my 'new car'
I knew that this car would serve me well. I had a good feeling and it drove like a dream. One of the best cars I ever had.
A close encounter a few months ago in my present car was Jennifer Warnes singing 'Ain't no cure for love'...Terry Wogan programme to be precise. I urged him to say, " and that was the beautiful Jennifer Warnes singing a Leonard Cohen classic" or words to that effect.
Terry said " and that was the lovely jennifer warnes...now let's go to the news"
Oh well, such is life.......

l c on British radio
the one and only time I heard Leonard played on the radio in England was when someone famous chose Dance me to the end of love for inclusion as part of their "must have" list on the program Desert Island Discs. Maybe we could bombard the request shows with some Birthday or Anniversary dedications for his music to get some more public awareness?
A good few years ago I phoned in for a competition on Capital Radio. The Kenny Everett Show and after I gave him the answer to the competition he said would you like a record played and I said "Bird on a Wire" and he said Capital only plays hits i.e. popular - it is like going to a record shop and asking for a record to be told there is no demand. There is demand there is just no supply.
I did hear a snippet of "Suzanne" once played on Room 101.

BBC and other UK radio channels have had excellent
interviews with Leonard during his career, here are some
from the 1990's:
Bob Harries Show 26.5.1993, on BBC Radio One
"The Canadian Songwriter Reflects on His Musical Career", 7.8.1994, on BBC Radio One
Johnnie Walker, 30.7.1994, also on BBC Radio One

You are correct Jarkko but they don't play his music and I think seeing as how his career has spanned so long it is diabolical.
The BBC also did the "Song from the life of". The BBC and other radio stations play commercially viable music. If they sometimes play music other than main stream it is little and not often. In Tom's country they play his music as a matter of course. Still they won't change now.

I know I'm digressing a bit now, but it's exactly the same with cinemas mostly only showing all the formula Hollywood films. I regularly see reviews for more interesting films that I look forward to watching but they never make it to my local cinemas. Just as well my sons share a taste for off beat films as they buy quite a few when they're released to video.
Jarkko,
which of those BBC is with J. Warnes and S. Vega which I also have,
and are there also recordings of this another 2 interviews existing?
I just got that question on my mail, didn't see this thread, so I was confused because I know only for this one, credited as "BBC Radio One 1994 Interview, with Warnes and Vega", and there's also its transcript on your site.

Yes, Warnes and Vega are discussing Leonard's work in
"The Canadian Songwriter Reflects on His Musical Career".
The transcription is on Carter Page's Cohen site.
Another great interview is "How The Heart Approaches What
It Yearns" presented by John McKenna in Ireland (on RTE), and
available on my site at http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/rte.html
I have recordings of those other BBC interviews in my collection.
