"Walk the Line"

Post by Steven »

I saw "Walk the Line." If you are a Johnny Cash fan, see it. Having
read Johnny's autobiography, the way some of the scenes played
out on the screen was eerily familiar.

On another note, I think I recall reading somewhere that Leonard
Cohen was planning to go to Nashville, at the beginning of his
music career, to enter country music. I very much enjoy some
of the more classic country sounds, but, truth be told, I'm glad
that Leonard didn't go that route. His rendition of "Tennessee
Waltz" alone, would probably be enough to make most country
fans agree.

Teratogen,

Johnny Cash's life, from where the movie left off, was even more
interesting and musically better (i.m.o.). I hope another movie,
of equal or greater quality, is made about it. I liked this one
a lot, though I won't be buying the soundtrack and don't think
that the actress that played his first wife should win an Academy
Award.

Hi Teratogen,

"who is saying that she should?" No one that I know.

"joaquin phoenix and reese witherspoon did their own
vocals and i thought they were amazing." I was more
impressed by the instrumental accompaniment. But,
that they didn't lip synch added to the energy of the movie.
As a fan of Johnny I was listening by way of
comparison to how he and June sang those songs -- and that isn't
entirely fair to the actors.

Did you ever see "Great Balls of Fire?" (I think that's the
title of the movie about Jerry Lee Lewis.) I thought that
movie was not nearly as good as this one.

most movies about musicians are almost always compared. "walk the line" has been compared to "ray," and it's hard to figure out which one i liked better. both were incredible films, but i'd have to bite my tongue and say "ray" was better. i always used to watch "la bamba" as a kid. but one that really took me by surprise and that i really enjoyed overall was "the buddy holly story."

Teratogen,

"Ray" was better, you say. I missed that one when it was in the
theaters, but will rent it when I join a rental club. I enjoyed
"La Bamba," too. Hadn't thought about "The Buddy Holly
Story" for awhile. -- Yeah, nice that you brought it up. Buddy
Holly had a very short recording career. Who knows
what kind of great music was cut short?

so did jimi hendrix. they've been wanting to make a film about his life but the hendrix family won't let ANYBODY use the real songs. and i think they're not even allowed to sing the songs in that movie like they did in "walk the line." i can't remember. same with janis joplin i believe. their family said no and two different films in the works about her were cancelled. same happened with some hendrix movie ideas. but i DID hear that andre benjamin, of the group outkast, is going to play hendrix in a movie and i guess this one is a "go." should be interesting.

Hi Teratogen,

Maybe it's the tragedy that marked the lives of Hendrix and
Joplin that has closed off those movie works of their lives. I don't
know.

Janis was a powerhouse of emotion channeled through her voice.
Big Brother and The Holding Company, i.m.o., was not near her
level of talent.

Yesterday, I showed up early for something. Near the place
was a used VCR and DVD store. To fill some time, I went
in; the owner asked if there is anything I'm looking for.
Thanks to your last post, I said, "Ray." I now own a copy.
A report will follow.

sweet, man.

on the topic of the pending janis and hendrix films, they were all either shot down, cancelled, or reworked because the families of both artists would not allow ANYONE to use the original recordings in the films.

um...I think I read somewhere that a Joplin biopic IS currently in the works, starring that pretty good girl singer who goes by the name of Pink.

i knew about that one but i thought it got cancelled. hm, that is interesting that it is a go now. it will be interesting to see if they actually are able to use the original music, too. well... i don't see why they would since they actually have a singer playing a singer. hm... well, it'll be interesting all around!

Teratogen,

Thanks for mentioning "Ray." It is very good. It's a complex movie
about a complex man. I don't think that "Walk The Line" has the
depth of "Ray," though I'd rate it higher on pure energy.

Interesting that both Ray Charles and Johnny Cash lost brothers,
tragically, when they were young.

yeah. that's just one reason why a lot of people were comparing both movies. and you are welcome. :D

Linda-by the Lake....

Janis Movie...

Post by Linda-by the Lake.... »

First I heard of the above project, Melissa Ethridge wanted to play the part (and does some JJ covers in concert - and quite well, too). Then, I heard that *Renee Zellwegger* (???) was going to play the lead, now Pink??? Hmm. I wonder if this project will ever be complete?

I think Janis opened doors for women rockers the world over, and should be 'immortalized' on film. However, I can see a director taking it to the 'sleazier' limits, with less emphasis on her music. Melissa does her material quite well, but would now be considered 'too old'. Ho Hum.

Never heard Reese mentioned though. Maybe a mix-up with Rene?

I LOVED Janis, and cried when she died. I think a 'good' biography is long overdue.

Over and out,
Linda.
