Sliding into heaven

Post by peter danielsen »

Bind me to your heart
for I have lost it all
behold a drunkards tear
towards the gutter fall

I'm nothing but a teardrop
I didn't choose my way
to join the chilling water
the gutter cold and grey

To slide into the darkness
with dirt and filth and brine
as no one could distinguish
the nasty flow from mine

Bind me to your heart
for I have lost it all
I sang towards the rising moon
proceeded with the fall

I felt just like a cogwheel
I knew my place in life
but longed for love and felt the stab,
the panic like a knife

Perceived to be a liar
I whined, but not enough
the Devil has a fleeting trunk
and quickly sheds the slough

Insanity was flaming
with dirt and filth and brine
as no one could distinguish
the wicked word from mine

Bind me to your heart
for I have lost it all
and Paradise I didn't choose
I didn't hear the call

But glowing harps are bursting
a teardrop with the sound
I'm sliding into heaven
while feeling deeply found

To tones of purest beauty
I vanish down the line
till no one can distinguish
the Holy light from mine.

Peter ~

This poem is SO effective that, despite its "lowly" nature, it paradoxically rises to the level of "exquisite" in its expressiveness. This would speak to the hearts of so many people, men and women, who try to drown their sorrows in alcohol and other drugs....and to those who don't, in their depths of despair regardless, absent the substances. I really like this poem. The part I really for its uniqueness is the 3rd, 6th, and last verses....with the last two lines of each and then the way the darkness turns to light in the last verse. The whole poem really....could go right through it and tell you why I really like each part, but I'll let it go with that. Excellent.

Peter, I agree with the others' appreciation. Given enough time, that tear would flow to the sea, and once again evaporate into cloud, which would drift across the heavens, and in time fall once more as soft rain on those who shared it originally. A beautiful poem. Thank you. Byron

This Text has now been set to music. The lyric I wrote one gloomy night in 2002, the music two years later. Now with my band "The Great Event" we have recorded the song. As you may know we have named our band from the poem bye Leonard Cohen, and this song, I think, bears the mark of his influence on our lives and music. Having said that I must stress that I for one long ago realized that there will always be a million floors up before I reach the hights of L.Cohen.

Anyone who would like to hear the song can send me their e-mail adress and I shall be glad to send it as a MP3.

Oh, I love this poem! I'd like to hear it set to music. I'm new here and just trying to read through and get to know you all. I'm Voo by the way.

Hi voo,

Scrool down and listen to the song by the great event, "the title is bind me to your heart now." It's a real dread to readers of modern poetry.
