Jimmy Webb
Jimmy Webb
I managed to get a last minute ticket for Jimmy Webb's show at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London, last night (and a good one L14 - dead centre). When I saw Webb ealier this year, I was a bit disappointed that he seems to have abandoned most of his Seventies catalogue. However, knowing this, I was able to go without expectations, and enjoy the unique blend of voice, piano and atmosphere that he creates. Webb kicked off with "Paul Gaughin in the South Seas" and "No Signs of Age" (arguably the best two tracks on his new album, and certainly among his best-ever songs). Other personal favourite were "Highwayman", and "All I Know" (recorded by Art Garfunkel). Needless, to say we got the whole spectrum of classics recorded by The Fifth Dimension, Glen Campbell and Richard Harris. I appreciated Webb's lengthy in-between songs stories. Done well, this is something of a lost art (perhaps not appreciated by the couple sitting next to me, who independently stared at their text messages throughout the interval!). Webb signed albums afterwards, and was happy to personalize the autographs, and sign more than one item. I thanked him for being supportive to Brian Wilson, and he said "Oh I LOVE Brian!". I bought Webb's new "Twilight of the Renegades album" and it's wonderful - beautifully produced, with his voice sounding better than ever. An album of this calibre is rare these days (sounding not unlike David Ackles in parts). It's well worth buying, and you can purchase it for around a fiver on Amazon. Love to all, John E
I'm pleased seeing that you chose to go. Many might have grumbled that they were't ever going to go again. When I saw Webb ealier this year, I was a bit disappointed that he seems to have abandoned most of his Seventies catalogue. However, knowing this, I was able to go without expectations,
I love the interludes. So much that adds to the songs is so often gleaned from them.I appreciated Webb's lengthy in-between songs stories. Done well, this is something of a lost art
