I S O: Cohen Dvd's

Hello
Relatively new to trading I don't really know where to start. A couple of months back I came across a montrealer who aquired some Cohen VCD's. One was The Song of Leonard Cohen and the other was the 88 BBC doc. Since then I haven't had the time to learn and start tradiing. Now with the summer ahead this may be the best time to get started. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it very much. I would love to get some sort of footage on dvd if anyone has. Like I said I don't have much to offer except those vcd's but am willing to do anything extra that would perswade someone in helping me. Thank you for the consideration.

are you able to copy DVDs?

If you can. I can send you a few DVDs if you promise to offer them back to this group (also asking them to re-offer & so on).

In all honesty I don't have a dvd copy system but my girlfriend does and many friends and it wouldn't be a problem to do what you ask.

Tom, I am guessing that you are located in the U.S. I don't recognise where you are from the initials N.D.G.

Most of my vcd or dvd material is in the European or PAL format so unless you have a multi region player it may not play on your equipment. I do have one NTSC disc that someone helped me to re-format for a friend in America so could make a copy of that if you wish to contact me

Hi Tom,
As Margaret says, find out if your system can play NTSC format DVDs, PAL DVDs or both.

Message me off-line with your postal address and I'll get some in the mail to you.

When you receive them; make a copy and offer them back to this forum with a request that recipients reoffer.

What a great practice! People have been very kind to me in this corner. I've done what I can with limited resources, and limited cash. But, I love to see this flourish. To watch the 'trading' or plain sharing. Very cool.

I'd like to extend my gratitude and thanks to RC and Margaret for offering to share what they have. I feel very lucky to have tuned in to this kind of community of people who just feel good about giving another person a chance to get that same feeling they got when they received something that few eyes have seen. Isn't N.D.G. Germany? How quickly I forget! The New Democratic? as opposed to the Federal Republic? If not, we could have a lot of fun finding other locations with like initials.

I think a rock just fell on my head. Multi-regional format??? Is this why there are some DVDs from Europe that I can't seem to play??? Some play beautifully others, not at all. And i'm sure the sender was not the problem. I don't know anything about this kind of thing, but they CAN be re-formatted? I hope so.

In Europe, and indeed most of the world, videos and dvd's are generally PAL format. I think USA and( maybe Canada also) are the only countries that use NTSC and the equipment in general use there will normally only recognise NTSC, unless a multi region player is used. You can actually buy a multi region player if you look around and check out the specification.

I never knew what format most of my collection was as it came from a variety of sources, but I can play anything. As a recent exercise my clever son found software to change the format of a dvd from PAL to NTSC for an American friend. However the program was running for over 2 days on my computer

Not the sort of thing to do very often. It was another learning experience for him, but I'm still totally baffled by such things!

The easiest solution if your player is getting old is to buy a cheap multi region player.

my understanding is that there are 2 issues here.

Margaret mentioned the major issue - video format (NTSC v PAL).

The other issue with DVDs is their region coding.
A DVD may be made for marketing within a specific region of the globe. Most DVD players will only play DVDs designed for a specific region. I think this is done to reduce cut price trading between regions.

I pulled the following region list from http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.htm :
1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East
3: Southeast Asia and East Asia
4: Australia, NZ, Pacific Isles, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
5: Eastern Europe (Frmr Sov Union), India, Africa, Nth Korea, Mongolia
6: China
8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

On the back of many commercial DVD cases you will find an region logo stating that the disc is encoded to work in one of those particular regions.

Yes, but Leonard's home made DVDRs are usually made all region. You probably cannot avoid PAL/NTSC easily when you made DVD at home from video tape, but why should anyone add Regional Code while (s)he makes the DVD at home?
All home-made DVDRs I have all region free, although PAL.
On the other hand, Austin DVD I got from US is even PAL/NTSC free - I watch it without problem on my equipment in Europe. So it can be done.

But the TV is only PAL - or that's not part of the problem, but just DVD player?

Almost all DVD players sold in Europe can show the program
on PAL TV although the original format is NTSC. Also many
players are region-free (or the restriction can be easily removed).
