If You Could Ask L.C. A Question

Post by Steven »

If you could have a question answered by Leonard Cohen, what
would you ask him?

I would ask him:
Can you give an incentive to poets of the forum when they win a competition?

I was in a second hand clothing store yesterday buying costumes/clothes. A friend was trying on clothes a playful/curious/bored little girl maybe four years old, was on the floor looking into her dressing room from the space between the door and the floor.

She said, "Hello"
Melony said in a pleasant tone, "Hello there, what are you doing?"
She said, "Are you happy?"
Melony said, “Yes".

I would like to think that if I ever met Mr. Leonard Cohen I would ask him a very profound question that would lead him to think I was a very intelligent enlightened and wonderful person. I would probably say, “Hiiii I llllike your ppppoems and stuff. Can I ggiive you a hug?” And I would laugh like a nervous school girl.

I would like to know that he is happy.

Cohen Question

Post by Cohendrix »

I don't know what I'd ask, but the funniest question I ever heard was on a late night CBC radio show called "Brave New Waves" around the time that _The Future_ was released.

The interview was in Montreal and Cohen was going on about how good the hotdogs were. The interviewer asked (solemnly), "Back in the 60s, did it ever occur to you that you were having A LOT of sex?"

Cohen cracked up laughing and it's one of the few times where I haven't heard a super-articulate answer from him in an interview.

Asking Leonard a Question

Post by leavallon »

That's a great anecdote. I wish I had seen that one.

I don't know what I would ask him either. I hope it would be a question that would get him talking and telling stories. I would like to just sit and listen to him.

I would ask him: "Do you have a minute for listening to a crazy man?" If he said Yes, I would tell him: "Thank you for all you have done for me by your work..." And I would go happy. I feel it as my debt. Though I have sent imy thanks to the mail address I found here, and I even received polite reply. I am sure it was just an assistant.

I can't even tell you how many heartbreaks and depressions his words have dragged me through. A few years ago I bought one of his songbooks written for the piano, and I still play those songs often. My favorite is Window. Those words give me the chills every time I hear them. Just talking about it makes me want to put it in the CD player.

Why aren't you in the rock and roll hall of fame?

YG:

Did you write your letters? One or a whole bunch of them?

I think if I ran into Leonard, I would become mute. I couldn't ask him anything. I think by leaving him alone is about the best thing I could do under such circumstances.

Tri-me:

You'd just want to know he's happy, huh? That's nice. Very sweet.

In the 1990s, Cohen enjoys a resurgence in popularity in North America. In 1991, he is inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame for his contribution towards "the greater international recognition of Canadian artists and music."
Does he have a star on the Canadian walk of fame yet, NO? Has anyone seen the walk of fame? I don't even know where it is. OK it is in the center of the universe Toronto. Here is a site where a nomination can be sent http://www.canadaswalkoffame.com/induct ... ations.xml Maybe start a new thread to inundate the site with nominations?

I will send one in

Tri-me,

I didn't even know such a thing existed! I think Toronto likes to keep these things to itself. It being the centre of the Canadian Universe, input from the 'burbs is probably not even considered.

I'm not surprised to see Shania on there. Where's Celine Dion? Bryan Adams? Dianna Krall? (too early for her) and a host of others. Do they have their 'star'? If Celine has one, i wish they'd take it away. Leonard should have, but then I doubt that he cares. Jim Carey? He may be Canadian, but I'm betting he hasn't stepped onto Canadian soil since Hollywood took him in. I'll have to look a bit deeper into the link to see who's there and who isn't. It wouldn't surprise me that Pierre Burton is, and Marshal McLuhan isn't. Or is this an 'arts' walk of fame? It just seems to me that these celebrity halls and walks of fame have glaring omissions and 'it must've been paid for' inclusions. Thanks for digging it out.

ah yes Celin Dion is there so is Diana Krall. Hey wouldn't you know it, there are no poet. Wassup with that hein? I hope that Leonard's fans nominate him. I started a new thread. I like Alanis Morisette, but ARGHHH she's there before Leonard ??!!!! People just have to give their names so people outside of Canada can nominate him. I am telling my friends who are fans too, from talking with them it looks like I could fill a bus to go to Montreal to see him when he tours. I am finding out that most of my friends fans from telling them about my kitty. One friend saw him in Montreal, McGill University, she remembers him on stage with a green candle in each side of him. "All" the women loved him and "all" the men were jealous. Lots of gazing going on 8)

Hi Tri-me,

I haven't as yet had time to look into the link, but I sure am going to. This is weird. Even if it were just an R&R 'walk of fame', Leonard would qualify.
Canada is so 'staid' in some ways. Maybe this was started by the 'new' generation of music lovers and Leonard slipped through the cracks (oops) or maybe he's too 'deep' (it just keeps happening!). Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly that he belongs there. Way up there. Kind of like the 'King' of Canadian talent. He should have been one of the first.

Unless, of course, this thing was started by those old farts who are still incensed by the fact that he wrote BL and 'had sex'. I guess this is exactly why I'm not a fan of these things...walks of fame...halls of fame, etc. Too much room for politics. Just like figure skating.

Linda.

As for the 'gazing', I have a lesbian friend who has lesbian friends who 'gaze' at Leonard also. Such is the power of his poetic 'prowess'.
