Why does this site seem slow?

Post by Sue »

Does anyone else find that navigating about this forum can take ages? When I go back to a previous page (e.g. back to the Index page after reading one of the threads) the screen often goes grey for 10-15 seconds or so, yet I find if I hit the "STOP" button the new page is already there (although the progress indicator tells me it is still loading).

Is this something to do with my browser, the way the site is built, or the amount of internet traffic I wonder? Anyway, it can be rather irritating and I wonder if others have the same problem. I recently upgraded my browser, although for reasons I won't go I have now gone back to the earlier version. I'm not sure that made any difference to the speed of navigation though.

Sometimes if I use the Back and Forward buttons I get a jumbled grey screen covered with indecipherable code. This maybe is something to do with browser version and doesn't bother me so much as the general slowness in moving around. Any advice Jarkko, or anyone?

A mystery to me, too! According to recent tests made by our
friends from all over the world the Forum should be almost
as fast as the main site (LC Files). However, the forum software
uses the java technique which may require more memory capacity than
the usual www-stuff. Also, if you use a slow net connection (modem?)
the problem is probably there. So my guess is either the RAM capacity of
your computer or your connection to your ISP.

PS. do you have similar experience with other boards (Patrice
uses the same software, the official Various Positions board a
similar one. -- but the newsgroup is a "normal" www-page if you
go through google groups.)?

Yes, I've had very similar experiences with the Various Positions board. I think you are probably right that it's connection speed more than anything (I missed that off my list!) Well, I use a 56k modem still and perhaps that is getting unusual now. It's not a major problem anyway, and I think I might not have said anything if I hadn't been feeling a bit bad-tempered yesterday. It won't stop me coming, and thanks.
