Leaving The Wire: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

Post by pipmel »

Hello everyone,

With Thanks for The Dance only a couple of days away, Leonard’s music has been playing in our house often in anticipation of the album’s arrival. Like many others, Leonard’s music and writing means so much to me and the profound influence it has had on my own creative pursuits is difficult to quantify. So, when in 2016 I heard of the great man’s passing, I was devastated. I felt compelled to reach for my notebook to pen some kind of tribute, no matter how insignificant, to the man who has given so many gifts to the world.

I am new here but, Jarkko told me this would be the best place to share the poem I wrote with you all.

Best wishes.

LEAVING THE WIRE
In Memory of Leonard Cohen

Through open hearts
We praise you, Len
As summer sleeps
And it's cold again
The room falls silent
Now you've gone
And left us all
This final song

I write this down
To mark the time
You penned the page
Our hearts in rhyme
The truth is hard
The dream is too
There are no words
To speak for you

There are no words
Which can express
My thanks to you
My gratefulness
For all you did
And all you were
You were the book
To which I'd refer

And now it's time
To leave the wire
A wave goodbye
From all your friends
And so we whisper
Hallelujah
Because we'll miss you
Because we knew ya
