Guilty Pleasures...

Post by linda_lakeside »

If this has been a topic before, I'm sorry. But, the world will continue to turn.

smccallon mentioned the above words in another thread, which made me wonder what some peoples' 'guilty pleasures' might be. I have a trunk full. I'd be interested to know if other people secretly adore "The Monkees" or other favourites only played for ones own self?

I used to love the Monkees. I just bought videos of their series off Ebay. Trouble is they are so dated now.

It depends what I am doing if I am doing housework I put stuff like Four Seasons, Abba, Beach Boys etc on something I can sing to. But I like things like the Proclaimers and Carpenters if I am cooking so I can harmonise (not). I have even been known to listen to Val Doonican. In quieter moments I like Leonard, Otis Redding, James Taylor etc. At parties I prefer Blue beat and Ska old reggae (not that I got to many parties now). I am not at all discerning

I'm not so discerning myself. I would suppose now, that "guilty pleasures" means different things to different people. For instance, I wouldn't consider the Beach Boys as one. I think Brian Wilson was/is (?) a genius. I love the Beach Boys. They personify, for me, the feeling of a long weekend, while still young  . Also, they make a fine song.

Then, I think, much dance music is considered a GP, probably a hangover from the disco days. Still, there is some good dance music out there. Abba = GP.

I think Cher is a good example of what I'm talking about. She's in my trunk. Not that I drag her out all that often. Music by people like Cher is generally considered as nostalgia (by me at least).

I also loved the Monkees - we still get the re-runs here. And yes, Paula, I'm so sorry, they look/sound dated. Yet, while I'm doing housework, etc. they just might be on the TV.

GP also extends to books. I have a weakness for police procedurals, serial killer type thrillers and the like. Oh yes, horror/ghost stories. All of it is perfectly fine and fun, at least if it's not one's only diet.

Paula, I'd really hate to wonder what you paid for The Monkees on eBay. You should have toldl me! I would've tape them for you!

Not that I consider it much of a guilty pleasure...I think she is one smart lady.

Brian Wilson is genius and has had a massive influence over a lot of music that came after The Beach Boys. Deffinetly not a guilty pleasure.

I like a lot of musicals too, Les. Miserables, Miss Saigon, Phantom Of The Opera. Loads. I consider them guilty pleasures.

Hi Dylan,

You consider Broadway shows GPs? That's interesting. A lot of good tunes came out of musicals, think Porgy and Bess. On film, we have that lovely Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl singing 'My Man'. She has a lot of power in that last part!!! Billie does it better though. Esp. her line "he beats me too" which Barbra didn't stoop to.

See you,
Linda.

I agree Linda.

But a lot of people tend to look down on musical theatre, so it isn't something that I discuss with a lot of people.

Funny Girl is a wonderful film. I love it.

Barbara tends to belt the song out, I love the way she sings it right at the end. I think I have it on CD somewhere too.

Billie Holiday sang it a whole different way. Like she was resigned to the situation. Barbara was more difiant.

Hi Dylan,

You are so right! I love that film too. I think that's one of my most frequently watched films of GP distinction. Maybe even of any and all distinction.

Babs did a great job on that tune!! Truly definat and yes, poor resigned Billie. I have the Billie CD, but not Babs (I won't use her initials). Barbra also did a good job on Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" (in my somewhat misguided view, perhaps), too good to be GP, though.

I know a lot of people don't take musical theatre seriously, but it is so rich! So much has come from Broadway and made it in to our world - seamlesssly.

I don't think all of what you're listening to is GP. No need to repent! I hope.

What is GP Linda something like "Three Billy Goats Gruff" or "Puff the Magic Dragon". I used to listen to "Tiptoe through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim that is definately a GP moment but without the P.

I consider my 2 techno cd's a GP.

The first i bought several years ago is titled: The God Within (scott hardkiss)

The other is a recent purchase after hearing a tune titled: RainCry. I think the cd i finally found that song on is title Liquid California...a compilation of various techno artists....

I like Moby's PLAY which i guess is pretty techno, too.

Eminem, Black Sabbath (Vol. 4), Billy Squire (guilty. guilty. guilty.)

OH Yeah! and a new group named: World Bang. Their latest cd is punkish, rockish...and has a head banging verions of Prince's, "When Doves Cry" that i adore. (guilty)

p.s. And...The Verve. Their "bittersweet symphony" is sublime and the rest of the cd doesn't suck. It is in my 'walkwoman' cd player right now...

Laurie, Laurie,

Poor misguided Laurie. Eminem is not GP! He is of Oscar status! As for the others, I don't know that they're technically GP - except for the techno. Bzzz.
