998 covers

Post by jarkko »

Our list at http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/test.html has now 998 entries! I've added these songs today:

The following covers were sent in by José Antonio Torres Almodóvar in Spain

* "Song of Bernadette" 4'06" by Phil Campbell (an Irish female singer),
on her CD "The Light Beyond The Woods" (1991).

* "First we take Manhattan" 4'16" by Phil Shackleton (an Irish male
singer), on his CD "Nuts and bolts" (1993).

* A live version of "Suzanne" 4'32" by Pearls Before Swine, on the
2004 CD compilation of rarities "The Wizard Of Is".

He also has found this previously unknown song (not listed yet):
"Come spend the morning" (Leonard Cohen / Bob Johnston) 2'56"
by Lee Hazlewood, on "Poet, Fool or Bum" (1973).

And the following were sent in by Daigi Nakakura in Japan

* Frances McKee: You know who I am on "Sunny Moon" (2004)

* The Weather Prophets; Who by fire on "She comes from the rain" (1987)

* Makoto Shimomura: Hallelujah/Zetubou To Kuno No Hallelujah on "KazeMachi" (Japan 2002 with different lyrics). The title means ''Hallelujah Of hopelessness & distless''

* Tokiko Katoh: Dance me to the end of love/Kanashimi No Dance' on
"Ethnic Dance" (Japan 1986 with different lyrics). The title means "Dance Of Sadness"

*She-shell: Who by fire on "Reep" (Japan 1999, heavy rock, in English)

Daigi has also found another interesting item, but we don't know yet WHICH Cohen song is on the album:
Les Contretemps, album "Les Contretemps"
GRT Canadian Talent Library Series 9215
(Released around 1969)
http://homepage2.nifty.com/aozorakissa/softrock3.htm

And finally two live versions contributed by Tom Sakic:

Ibrica Jusic:
Minute Prologue/Prolog
So Long, Marianne/Zbogom malena
on the live DVD album: Amanet & Best Of u HNK Zagreb (DVD), December 2004.

While wanted to giving a hand - Outrageous-for-some-Sister-of-Mercy-Me - I tripped over the 999 cover :

http://www.yolkrecords.com/index.php?page=223

namely : Sister of Mercy by the group Crlustraude.

If no translation of the article is done soon by a fellow fan volonterr, I'll come back to do a resume. OK?

Now who will top the 1000???? At your search engine all! GO!!!

(BTW Les Contretemps also covered Gilles Vigneault on 1971, it it could be of some help, for doing the research. Songs : Berlu/La marche du président)
Have a nice day Ev. I have to run now (pfffiu)

Penny Lang sings Suzanne but....

Post by Tchocolatl »

It is another of these bizarre turns of fate that Penny Lang could have turn to be the 1000 "covering artist". :D

"Penny's time in New York was also the source of an incident, a story that has become a small legend in folk music circles. Penny sang songs by many Montréal songwriters, including one by a local poet who had begun putting his poems to music. Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne and the way Penny sang it impressed everyone who heard it. Once, at Gerdes Folk City, David Wilkes brought two executives from a major record company backstage. They had heard her sing the song and wanted to record it, but they wanted to spice it up a bit, add some electric instruments. Their proposal was a masterpiece of bad timing. Folk singers were sensitive at that time to the word “electric” — Dylan had been booed for plugging in. Penny, in the middle of a show, said “No!”

Do not worry she is not sorry about this, as per this other article :

"Although Penny was in high demand as a performer in the late-1960s, a recording contract never quite happened for her. Once, while performing at Gerde's Folk City, she was approached by a couple of record executives who'd heard her sing "Suzanne," a haunting song written by Montreal poet Leonard Cohen. "They knew it would be a hit, but they wanted me to record it with an electric band," Penny recalled. "I told them `No thanks, I'm an acoustic musician.'" Not long after, "Suzanne" was a hit for both Noel Harrison and Judy Collins.

Looking back, Penny is glad now that she didn't have that hit with "Suzanne." "I probably would not have lived," she said."

hum... maybe on her next release. Interesting to know about this, anyway :D

Who is she?

"Her songs are emotionally powerful observations of the human condition, sometimes poignant, sometimes humorous, always memorable."

Hallelujah?

Post by Tchocolatl »

My pleasure Jarkko. :D

Seems to me that fans are too busy fighting trolls (is this the Lord of the Ring board or what?) to have jump on their search engine (BTW does somebody know how to stop this thing??? Please? 8) )

Hum... I've got this Ms. Crow, Sheryl

Hallelujah

What do you think, about this one? I guess that as long as the track is not on a CD, that does not count.

It's funny the unusual and rarities one could find.... :)

The Stranger Song

Post by Tchocolatl »

(I-know-I-know...this is sick...)(and... ain't no cure....)

Well. I found a CD name L'ivresse des vaincus by Thibaud Couturier on which he is covering the fantastic Stranger Song (He translated : La chanson de l'Étranger).

Scroll the article below and you will find the info :
http://www.nouvelle-vague.com/chroniques.php

He has a site. There : http://www.thibaudcouturier.com/index2.htm

And this CD thing which worth the "title" "cover" to this whole enterprise : (you have to put his name on the box"artiste" and then to clik on "rechercher" to arrive on the spot) : http://www.mosaicmusicdistribution.com/

Dear Tchocolatl

You did it - found the 1000th cover version!
A Thousand Covers Deep - I guess there are not many
artists whose work has been rewarded by so many
colleagues.

PS: I also got Perla's new Cohen album today. That
gives us ten more entries... More about it later!

Thanks, Linda, I must confess that I have not the beginning of a clue about this joke : "where's Monte Hall? Are you going to pick door #l or door #2?, now the Hall of fame. Shame, shame, shame.

As for the translation of the Stranger Song of this cover, I am disappointed. Most of the strongest images are washed away, I can only recognize the shape of what I find so poignant in the original. This song is one of my very VERY favourite, therefore, I am a emotional about it. How can I explain, emotionally speaking? The feeling I have reading the cover... It is like if you would find the lyrics of the song on the seashore while walking along the ocean by a fuggy little morning. "Ah! it is that song" Unfortunately at many places you just see shapeless spots of ink where should have stood stunning strong words like bullets of iron in fire. I do not know for the quality of music, but as long as the lyrics are as important as the music with Cohen, I am disappointed with this cover.

How I prefer the wonderful story I have found about Silverwolf, above. :D

For me it will always be the 1000 kisses deep catch. 8) Eh..... that's Life

Hi Tchoco,

Re: the confusing Door #1, etc., forget it, it's not important. What is important is the way you left your impression of this particular cover. Very nice (the way you described it) and I understand what you mean.

As for the rest, (of my remarks) they were just random thought associations that happened to make it to the page. Bad habit of mine. One day I'm going to post the associations I don't mean to post. That will be a very unfortunate day for me.

I don't try to make jokes, if it sounds strange to you when you read it, well, that's just me.

I'm sorry the cover didn't meet with your expectations. Yes, the search engine. Handy gadget. Again, I'm glad you found it! Even though you don't like it. Sorry about that part.

Regards,
Linda.

Well, it's Easter Sunday and I have to be gone soon, so Happy Easter to you! [/i]

In fact I was not expecting anything. I think it was just the human nature and its liking for finishing what it has begun. A matter of closing the circle.

Regarding my opinions about the lyrics, well, I'm open to argumentation about it, as for everything. I am not falling into pieces because of an opposition. Thanks G_d I can look at an argument and decide if it is relevant or not and change my mind accordingly. I often see people that are more prone to demolish any opposant - this is more easy to them then to put their rigid system of values into question. It is another way to deal with differences, but not mine, so you can go ahead.

The day you will post associations you do not want to post? I think that on that day you may be the only one affected, like for the 8 thing. As for me, it is not taboo to say what one has in mind or what's lay behind as long as it not harms anyone. So, with me, you can go ahead without fear of your truth. [/u] (evolution of behaviour can not harm - it was beginning to be boring, no?)
