Imperfect Offering is a Leonard Cohen Tribute Band. When Peter McMillan, lead vocalist of Imperfect Offering, began playing the guitar in 1972, one of the first songs he learnt was Leonard Cohen’s ‘Suzanne’. Whilst having an interest in his music since then, Peter became a passionate follower of Leonard Cohen and his music when Cohen and his band performed in Auckland in January 2009. Inspired by the “I’m Your Man” tribute album and the tribute concerts performed during Cohen's fifteen year absence from public performance, Peter decided to form a band to do a Leonard Cohen Tribute Concert here in New Zealand. Imperfect Offering is the result. It took many months to gather enough musicians interested in this project and some members of the band first met together in November 2014. Since February 2015 the band have been rehearsing together consistently. They are currently performing only Leonard Cohen songs as they work towards a Tribute Concert sometime in 2016. The Tribute Concert will include more than 20 of Leonard Cohen’s most well-known and loved songs. Imperfect Offering have performed at a number of small gigs throughout this year. Their main event for the year will be on November 14th when they will perform a half concert programme of 11 songs.
The name ‘Imperfect Offering’ is inspired by Cohen’s lyric in ‘Anthem’:
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in
