Leonard Cohen covering someone else's songs?
Leonard Cohen covering someone else's songs?
Does he ever sing other people's songs, either live or on record?
(not to mention "Un canadien errant")
(not to mention "Un canadien errant")
"Tennessee Waltz" off Dear Heather (by Redd Stewart & Pee Wee King)
"Passing Through" off Live Songs (by R. Blakeslee)
"Be For Real" off The Future (Frederick Knight)
"Always" off The Future (Irving Berlin)
"The Partisan" off Songs from a Room (Anna Marly / Hy Zaret)
I also have copies of Cohen doing "The Streets of Laredo" and "I Can't Help Falling in Love" live.
I'm sure there are many more out there, though.
The covers he does on his studio albums are both strinkingly chosen and rendered--they sound like they should be Cohen songs.

Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody
I got some money cos I just got paid .... etc that song
A little while ago Greg, who posts more on the LC Newsgroup, put in a link to some old recordings that he had cleaned up from audience tapes. This was on it as well as other interesting snippets like the reply to the critic who complained about too much shmaltz, and an improvisation I'm the man who wrote Suzanne when he forgot the words to the original.
I think the link was called 2 shakes of a lambs tail, and it was possible to download or listen to a collection of unusual or rare material. Not sure of the correct address of that link or if if's still out there. Maybe someone else out there can clarify this ?

Linda,
try http://www.twoshakesofalambstail.com/st ... index.html
You may still be able to download or listen to this collection one at a time. Let me know if it doesn't work.

Thank you Margaret
Funny cover indeed but the one I thought you had ment was Tom Wait's
THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT
"Well you gassed her up
Behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one
In your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're looking for the heart of Saturday night"
My mistake.
I like the Tom Waits song. Great to listen to while driving.

Simon,
In the Heart of Saturday Night is one of my favourite albums of all time. Some like the 'new' Tom Waits - some like the 'old' Tom Waits, I'm with the latter. He has come out with some great new stuff (and I love it when he pops up in a movie). I can't believe he's still in the game after all he's done. A lot of people don't like 'Saturday Night' as it's 'too pop'. However I find it quite accessible as well as (I guess NOW it would be dated) - anyway, it's a Desert Island pick for me.
"Let's put a new coat of paint on this lonesome old town,
Set 'em up, set 'em up, we'll be knockin 'em down".
He knocked down plenty, glad he's still around!
Cheers (?)

To Love Somebody by Bee Gees. Great 1980 live performance.
Btw, Another Saurday Night (Melbourne, 1980) was stopped after few lines, I think that was just some kind of teasing the audience (it's about 50 seconds long).
Linda, I do have all these performances (Rare Live Songs Vol. 1, Rare Live Songs Vol. 2 - I see it's the same tracklist on margaret's link). I'll send it over to you at some pont, soon:)
Btw, always somebody links this site. I can't find who made it? There's nothing than those mp3s in simple text format.?

We can't forget the duet with Elton John... "Born To Lose". I don't remember who wrote it, though.
I'd love to hear some more duets from Leonard, sort of in the vein of what Van Morrison does with other artists... those Van duets are always so good. For a long time now, I've been wishing Leonard would pair up with Lucinda Williams to do that great old Hank Williams song, Cold Cold Heart.
