Song of mine based on Cohen's THe Future cover

Post by dreamermusic »

I'm a Spanish amateur songwriter. The chorus of this song is based on Cohen's "The Future" cover and it also includes one sentence of one of his early poems (in red). You can listen to it at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI7Tgy5PxfU

Hope you like it. The chorus is:

Now let the hummingbird keep flying
High and free above the heart
Let the shackles there beneath them fall apart.
Send them a raven ahead of the dove
While you can still keep your stand
Against their flaws
Against their laws and lies.
-Madrid 1993 (standing up face to face to Leonard, leaning my arms upon the stage (no cams, no security line), my hands touched Cohen's feet!) (talked to Cohen for 20 minutes after concert!!!)
-Lisbon 2009 (1st row!!)
-Madrid 2012 (1st row centred facing Leonard!!)

Hi Daniel ~

I like your use of Leonard's line and his influence in your song.
Like your harmonica playing, too. Wish the sound on your voice was louder and the clarity were better, but I could make most of it out.
Checked out a couple other of your videos while I was there and like your blues... two from the 2010 Blues Session is what I watched. Again, though, the volume on your voice was too low :( .

Just as I returned to comment, I noticed your signature and that you said you talked with Leonard for 20 minutes after watching his Madrid concert from a great seat in 1993. And GREAT seats for Lisbon and the upcoming Madrid! I'll be at both of those venues in 2012. Would you care to share any of that conversation? It had to have been wonderful for you as a musician.

Thanks for sharing your song!

great, daniel. you are far better at emulating cohen than myself. if ever he needs a stand-in, you're his man! but i agree with lizzie that on one or two songs the words are slightly drowned beneath the music, and one has to strain to hear your gift of a golden voice.

Thanks to you both. I'll mix next songs with my voice a little bit louder. Thanks for the advice.
By the way, the Daniel Granado you talk about the "jazz session" it's not me. It's "another" Daniel Granado somewhere in the world I do not know.

Mainly, what I talked to Cohen in 1993 was telling him about I am a songwriter, and his "number one fan" here in Spain,. I told him the great amount of kilometres I had travelled to see him. He signed me a couple of CDs, the ticket concert and the tour book. It was an unforgetable dream come true.

Here you are the whole lyrics to the song

THEY

They rule your life
They ruin your night
They tell you what to do
And some of you
Believe their truths
And some don’t even mind.

They don’t make good
They rape your brain
They bound you hand and foot
They tell their lies
But you resign
To keep yourself to a tight rein.

Now let the hummingbird keep flying
High and free above the heart
Let the shackles there beneath them fall apart.
Send them a raven ahead of the dove
While you can still keep your stand
Against their flaws
Against their laws and lies.

They pay no tax
They take your leg
They make you beg your crumbs
They fool you hard
They hold an ax
To cut your little hands.

They seem so nice,
So bold and brave,
They enjoy your voiceless cry
They drain your faith
They cork your wine
But they don’t mind the State though.

thanks for the lyrics, daniel... look forward to the remix.
so, how do we know which daniel is which?
are you the only one to post your videos?
do you never play/sing blues?
the low voice precluded matching or realizing a mismatch.
