Comfort me with apples
I who can only forgive
For whom forgiveness is a serpent
That leads me from the garden
Nourish me with apricots and figs
Fallen from the branches of wisdom
When my eyes are bathed in morning
When my hands cannot pick the tender fruit
And my mouth hungry for feeding
Let me sit beneath you
Hidden in the vale of your shadow
In the green fields of north London
By the great lakes of Michigan
Comfort me and cover me
With the shadow of your shadow
Until I wake in hunger, whereupon
Lay me up the apples of requited love
So round and green
Sweet and comforting to my taste.
With Apples
