Oh wretched clock.
Thou dost deny me
that magic place
twixt sleep and wake.
Without thee the morning bird
doth make this division by gentle song,
so heart-warming and happy to wake upon.
The night's slumber exchanged for semi-wakefullness,
where magnificent events are recalled,
where plans for future victories are made,
and pleaseures of the flesh maintained.
But every now and then one's life events
demand
these simple pleasures be foregone
defaulting to thine screaming
ALARM.
And now the heart no longer sings,
but rages to escape it's bodily constraint.
And the body itself
compelled to sustain the rigorous syncopation
of pumping adrenaline,
marched along at brake-neck speed
preparing this earthly vehicle
for it's oncoming deed.
Thou dost destroy
the placid place inside my head,
turning it instead
to fear and flight desires.
No more of this!
On the morrow
I shall return
to NORMAL SLEEPING HOURS.
Oh, Wretched Clock!
Hi Marilyn
! I love this for many reasons
. It describes perfectly the physical and psychological effects of alarm clocks on myself. It's fuel for my former-husband's fire as to their unnaturalness and negatory impact on our lives, both our sleeping and our wakefulness. He doesn't use and has ensured that he doesn't need to use one, via the sculpting of his lifestyle. I'll be printing and mailing it to him for his own "Yes!" enjoyment of it. I really like the way you use terminology from a time that preceded the use of alarm clocks. If not, they certainly didn't dominate as they do today. The 'modern' references are as appropriately-jolting as the alarm itself when it blasts into one's consciousness.

Thanks
Thanks you guys (Lizzytysh and Laurie) for reading and commenting, especially since they were both favourable. This is the first time I've written in this style and a friend suggested I put it up here. Its actually the first time Ive publically displayed anything Ive written. I'm encourage to continue now. Thanks heaps. Marilyn
