My "Alexandra"

Post by rick »

This is a song that I was playing around with in the early 90's. I had the melody and the chorus lyrics but no verse lyrics. It was originally called "Isabella".

My friend David, whom I was playing and writing with at the time, had a new girl friend named Alexandra so he took the song and wrote the verses and switched "Isabella" to "Alexandra" David seems to recall that we wrote the verses together over some bottles of wine one night. I don't have any recollection of that and believe the verses to be his, though I suppose it's possible if enough wine was around!

Now I realize that ol' David must have been a Leonard fan because he clearly had heard Suzanne at some point I think (the line "biscuits and tea" and "like a bird with a broken wing")!

if the sun sets on the morrow
and your heart's still filled with sorrow
and moonbeams leave you lonely
oh, come and talk with me
like a rat running a maze
i've been lost in so many ways
but i promise i will listen
and give you biscuits and tea
chorus
alexandra, alexandra
with the moon and stars above ya
how your love shines alexandra
on a poor old heart like mine

as you travel through your time
and life gives no reason or rhyme
lose your fears and insecurities
and throw a rope to me
like a bird with a broken wing
i've been grounded by so many things
but now i see the skyline
oh come and fly with me
chorus
alexandra, alexandra
with the moon and stars above ya
how your love shines alexandra
on a poor old heart like mine
alexandra, alexandra
i can see why men must have ya
for your love lies alexandra
like a cure for broken lives
