McCabe and Mrs Miller

Post by Paula »

Just a reminder that McCabe and Mrs Miller is on Channel 5 just after midnight

12:35 a.m. to be exact. I don't for one minute think it is a celebration of LC's birthday but it is timely as of course it is the 21st September and he is another year older(for British viewers only)

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear Leonard
Happy birthday to you

......and many more, Leonard.

I suspect the programmers knew exactly what they were doing, particularly with the time slot being [in England, where he's quite well-known and performed multiple times] on the 21st, at just over the line.

Interesting broadcasting timing here (in Israel ) too:
"Leonard Cohen - Spring 1996" documentary on channel 8 (the Culture Channel) and "Pump Up The Volume" on channel 4 - both broadcasted on friday night.

Hi Einat,

Yes, what we see here is that with any anniversary date ~ regardless of the event, birthday or otherwise ~ there is topic-based focus in the media, be it television, radio, newspaper and magazine articles, introduction of new/playing of old songs, or new releases/reruns of movies at the theatre. They know people will be interested, they know people will be talking about it and sharing viewing times, and their own goal is to increase viewership, and for those supported by commercials, exposure to them. Part of the job of programmers is to determine how to maximize these things, so I don't see the dates as being coincidental at all to Leonard's birthday. Some of it's human-interest based, and a lot of it's all about money. Again, Leonard's well known in the media in Israel, so it makes perfect sense to me. And as you say, Mazal Tov, Leonard! I know that's a good thing :) ....does it translate to "congratulations"?
