Hitting the headlines

Post by missbrodie04 »

Hello

Anybody out there from the UK who saw Saturday's edition of The Independent newspaper? They printed an article about the resurgent popularity of cocktails among young drinkers and entitled it 'First we take Manhattans'! Seems one of their journalists is an LC fan... :)

Yes, that brought a smile to my face too! Coming a few days after the Lou Reed reference to Leonard's songwriting as well. Nice one, Indie.
Cheers,

Whether they like or loath Leonard the British press often seem to mention him one way or another. Why don't they ever play his songs on the radio. Can anyone British tell me if they have EVER heard a Cohen song sung by Cohen given airspace?

Dear Paula,
The last time I recall a L.C. song being played on radio was in 2002, a couple of weeks behore the official release of T.N.S.It was "Here It Is", played by Janice Long on the Radio Scotland arts/magazine programme on Saturday mornings. She raved about the track, and about Leonard too!
I taped the whole programme and played the track daily until the album was released!

Jeremy Vine had a thing on his Radio 2 show earlier this year where he played various cover versions of Hallelujah, one each day - I think he started by playing the Kathryn Williams one as a one-off, and the others (including LC's own) came in response to listener requests. He seemed to subscribe to the old stereotypical view of LC as depressing though, which maybe explains why we don't get more...

Dear Miss Brodie,
Apart from your name (such an Edinburgh one too),
can you tell me which cover versions of "Hallelujah" did Jeremy Vine play?
In particular, did he play Jeff Buckley's ?
There's a 10th anniversary C.D. / D.V.D. (not quite sure) of Jeff's work (albeit tragically short) . I read the review in yesterday's Guardian.
His "Hallelujah" is the best I've heard : has anyone topped it?
Looking for replies on this one,
Andrew.
