Friendship



Your life became wedded to obtuse explanations

and gloomy, stygian roads you need not have traveled.

You pressed past every sensible limit despite protestations

of those who loved you and found themselves baffled.

I can smell desperation on you every time you move

and I am forever startled by every lie you dare to speak.

Our love for you is something no one needs to prove,

but why must it constantly involve a turning of the cheek?


We left a world behind us that ruined us with lies,

but our loyalties were not easily forgotten or shaken.

Our aspirations were treacherous and rife with surprises

that seduced us with promises with which we were taken.

What can we do to sever our ties with that dark dream?

And what true desire do we really have to make it so?

You are consumed with constant doubt so it would seem,

and I am unsure either of us have any desire to say no.
