Dear friends:
Here you can find a live MP3 from my latest concert in Barcelona where I debuted my own cover of "Wainting for the miracle" translated in Catalan:

I hope you enjoy it!
Best regards,
Jordi

An agreeable surprise meet you here, presenting your LC's covers. :D

I try to follow your steps, but I could not be present at the latter concert. The music that you do is exactly the one that I like and really it seems to me very good. Marvellous. Were you recording soon the new thing that you did in this concert?

I cannot understand why any more LC's covers are not done in our language, the Catalan. Checking the list of covers of this site, only Suzanne of Toti Soler appears with that of Joan Manuel Serrat. In fact it’s the same: Serrat did it in Toti's work honor. And it’s all. There is nothing more than four your ones. I wait that early are included in the file of covers of Leonard Cohen Files.

On one hand we have people capable of doing it - we have to see the number of good Dylan's covers - and on the other hand the love, fervor would say, that there’s in Catalonia for Leonard. I cannot forget all those people singing deeply moved, more or less in English, with Cohen in the concerts of 1980 and 1988 in Barcelona.

Regards and come in!

[Off-topic, but curious ~ "Regards and come in!" ~ is that lovely phrase a Catalan one?]

Catalan covers

Post by jorcx »

Thanks Toni, I really appreciate your encouraging comments:
I think it would be a very good initiative to do some kind of compilation CD with Catalan covers of Leonard songs, it would be a nice 70th birthday present, but as you say there´s not many covers available in our modest language. Apart from "Susanna" which you mention, I also have a live rarity of "Hallellujah" by Jordi Batiste (a great singer-songwriter who has also covered many Dylan songs). As for me, I am very happy to advance that I have received official permission by Sony Music to include "Esperant el miracle" in my forthcoming CD, I´ll keep you informed...
Best regards from Barcelona,
Jordi

Hi Jorcx!

Yes!!! Great great! I believe that it’s a magnificent idea. I wait for it with a lot of illusion. Come in, come on or “som-hi”!!  :D

I’m only public, but, can I do anything? Send mails to Falsterbo, Gerard, Ia... I don’t know :?:

(There are many languages more modest that ours, the problem is we are modest.) :(

I surprise to know of this version of Batiste. This one isn’t recorded, I’m sure. Since I haven’t heard it, I cannot say that it’s my favorite Hallelujah. A pity.

Thank you very much for being kept informed,

Lizzytysh, (off topic for a curious),

Oops!!

I wanted to say that’s in Catalan, but I cannot. I prefer not imagining the stupid meaning of my messages in this badly English.

Well, I try it, for Leonard Cohen I will support it. You know:

And here’s a man still working

Dear ForYourSmile ~

Oh, please don't be embarrassed! It's so charming :D ! As a parting greeting, it comes across rather Zenlike, in that as you are parting, you're telling them "Regards" and at the same time to "come in" ~ it's like leaving them with the same feeling that you had when you first greeted them, that same kind of fullness of emotion and welcomeness, even in their departure.

My immediate thought was of the olde, Greek mythology ~ where when a visitor came they were first welcomed and fed, and maybe even given fresh clothes [I'm not sure on that part]. Only after that were they asked why they had come. It's such a beautiful image of grace and truly welcoming someone, in to [and, in your case, out of] your home, with love.

Interesting idea, good-bye and hello. It seems to me beautiful.

Really, all is in the ancient Greek culture.

The truth, this didn’t know it, mine was a mistake.

Thank you for your comprehension far beyond of my limited capacities.

Hi there! :D
I´m glad to hear all this activity in the forum... The compilation CD with Catalan covers is of course a dream but I suppose now it´s a little bit late to get it ready for Lenny´s birthday. Anyway, I´ll try to do my own tribute to him in any concert that I may play in the following months, and if I have the chance I´ll propose to do duets (how about me and Sisa singing "One of us"... ?). For you who may be interested, I´ll be making out the Mp3 of "Hallellujah" covered by Jordi Batiste as soon as I can. He never recorded it but it was played live (voice and guitar) on 16th May 2003 in a small venue in Barcelona (and I recorded/bootlegged it). It sounded more or less like the Jeff Buckley version but with Catalan lyrics... Have a great summer,
Jordi

The other-language covers captivate me. I was unaware of the existence of the Catalan language until this Forum. I believe [?] it was Makera who originally spoke of it here, with regard to her husband. I think an entire cd in Catalan [a compilation] is a marvelous idea :D . In the meantime, I'd be very interested in the Jordi Batiste [whom I'd also never heard of until now] cover of Hallelujah. Your idea of having something ready by Leonard's birthday is great ~ however, doing what you're able by tribute-ing him yourself is fine, as well ~ and, I know, he'd appreciate it, too 8) . I know from listening to him in a recorded interview, on a California radio program called Morning Becomes Eclectic, that he seems particularly touched by recordings of his songs in other languages. With the uniqueness and rarity of Catalan, that would make a very special gift :D ! I hope you guys are able to pull it together ~ before or after his birthday, doesn't matter.

Jordi - I will be grateful for this MP3, now I hear that of Jeff and try to imagine of him. Slow and deep. Batiste is really big. As Lizzy says, we hope this CD advances for Leonard (and also for us). I will try to be informed about your concert. If you want to communicate directly with me in Catalan: molist@telefonica.net, I have your site.

(Jordi Batiste and Sisa are veteran singers with several discs published with a diffusion limited by our language. The good music of them forms a part of my life.)

After the classic Greek we had to wait for Leonard Cohen to complete the comprehension of the human feelings. Well, in this interval, also some of them did good attempts.

That is excellent, ForYourSmile....a context in which I'd never considered Leonard, but one that resonates all the way back to ancient Greece. Of course, remember Shakespeare, as well.
