Speaking in fragments

as part of some
unsolved puzzle
made up of jagged pieces
of glass
each a different colour
each slicing deep into
the fingers touching them
arranging them
into symbols of meaning
bloody fingerprints
identifying the meager
attempts
at placing it all together
even though
the pieces come from
different boxes
separate tokens

futility
binding them together
in blood

there is no place here
for the things we’ve found
the scattered little bits
we’ve gathered together
the found pieces
of other lives
the fragments of hopes
dreams loves
plans schemes
blueprints
unfolded maps of a journey
not taken
tickets unused
stairs not climbed
guitar sitting untuned
unplayed
songs unwritten
undrunk cup of coffee
dried to a thick black scab
unlistened to songs on the disk
unopened
unravelling at the edges
an old sweater
never worn but worn away
out of style
a pattern woven from a
loose array of fabric
wool nylon cotton
handpicked from memory

the silence
the quiet
even now with the darkness
forbidden to mention
the words
the name
the reason implied
the address unknown
the message unsent
the chorus unlistened to
where slip meets fall
where cold meets hot
where all meets nothing
siblings greeting rivalry
like a tongue clicking its dissent
tsking away intention
as if to say
what a family is

water forms on the chill surface
condensation
the breath in the air
formed from words
muttered
whispered
muted
only the foggy wisp of them
as evidence
& the forming of the water
on the cold chill surface
slowly turning
jack frost
in the tired images
it etches

curtain call
the crowd forms
takes their seats
settles back
tired feet crossed
at the ankles
hands clutching playbills
the music starts
the lights dim
the play begins:
two children quarrelling
over the remote
the view tight
to their faces
spotlight brightens
then fades
the colours changing hues
as the mood spills
out
into the choir singing
the orchestra playing
the conductor pausing
as the audience
wept

showing texture
giving shape
depth
forming the softer illusion
that something definite
is happening
in the frame
posed
upon the question
the camera
asks
