Calling Fellow Canadians - CBC listeners

Post by Cate »

CBC is holding a contest to choose which song will be played from our peace tower on Canada Day. I'm not entirely sure but I think the radio show host this morning said that Hallelujah was currently in the lead ... which would be fantastic especially as it's not even one of the suggested songs.

Voting ends TODAY
here's where you go http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/program/e-mail ... email.html

Wouldn't it be great to hear this ring out from our peace tower? - please vote

Thanks for posting this, Cate. I voted for Hallelujah yesterday!

Hi Cate - I'm not Canadian, but your post lifted my heart & brought a joyous smile to my face - the idea of Leonard's beautiful golden voice, singing Hallelujah, being broadcast from the Peace Tower (probably in Montreal?) and, I'm imagining, heard for miles around (?) - how wonderful that would be!! Wish I could be there for it, if it happens. . . My calendar says June 6 is "Canadian Forces Day" - is that the Canada Day you are talking about? (Hope you don't mind my non-Canadian self jumping in here). Please let us know if this comes to be. . .

Hi Holydove - The Peace tower is a bell tower and stands in front of our Parliament buildings in Ottawa, so it wouldn't be Leonard's voice but the actual bells playing his song. I'm sure it would be a beautiful sound and a highlight to the festivities. We celebrate Canada on July 1st, I think it's similar to 4th of July - red maple leaf flags and pins, music and fireworks.

You got my vote Kate. I was listening to Rich Terfry on CBC Radio2 yesterday when he mentioned this contest. Hallelujah was the first song that came to mind for me as well. I don't think any other Canadian song would sound nearly as beautiful that I can think of.

I've registered my vote too, even though I'm an ex-pat...but still a citizen! I'll make sure to be listening to Radio 2 on Canada Day to hear the result. Somehow it just wouldn't be the same to have "My Way" pealing from the Tower.... ;-)

I voted for Hallelujah, too! (I must, however, admit that the first song to come to my mind was Anthem!) What a wonderful idea, though! Let's keep our fingers crossed that it is Leonard's sublime song to ring from the tower!

Thanks Mary...so thrilling! Yesterday morning at work I had our ratty little radio tuned to CBC2 all morning but then realized the announcement wouldn't be until between 5 and 6pm and I was tied up at that time. However much we may talk about being tired of all the covers of Hallelujah, and hearing the song constantly, it remains an instantly recognizable, incredibly beautiful song, and what an honour for Leonard's masterpiece to be chosen as the song played on Canada Day from the Peace Tower in Ottawa!! :D

Thanks Mollydog/Mary!

How cool!!!! 8) 8) :D

Did you get to hear it yesterday - I think you were "around there?"

Unfortunately you cannot hear it at the link - just an interview with the carillon player?

Congratulations to Leonard Cohen - again! And "HALLELUJAH!"
