ONCE WE HAD BEEN THERE

Does the evening breeze
still lift the seagull's feathers
as they float on a cellophane sea?
Do you still run
from the lace-frilled edges of the tide
laughing as they catch you unawares?
Does the soft September rain
still glisten on that wild blackberry?
And does the elm still hold the arrowed heart
you carved so patiently?
Is there still some evidence
That once we had been there.

Does the morning mist
still creep around the rooftops
after cold wet unresponsive nights?
Does the street light
still cast shadows of the trees
swaying upon the bedroom wall?
Are those diamonds of dust
still suspended in mid-air
in the beam of light across the hall?
If so, does it ever make you think of me?
Or do you have to coach your mind
That once we had been there.
