The Bullet and the Bull's-Eye

Post by Teratogen »

The Bullet and the Bull’s-Eye

Your mouth like an automatic weapon
You don’t even need to think
You just pull the trigger
And I’m one more step closer to heaven
I see the big picture
And it’s only getting bigger

Load and aim, squeeze and repeat
Deep in my anxious heart
I can feel it enter
Where the bullet and the bull’s-eye meet
The fatal wounds of love
Smashing through the center

I turned my back on the gun
And was defeated with violence
Yet you still think this battle won
Was in keeping your silence

I knelt before you because
I surrendered control
But there never really was
Any battle at all

No one with the forethought is here to question
The gentleness of your hand
Or your marksmanship
When they bear witness to your art of expression
That unforgiving elegance
To shoot from the hip

On the threshold of your steely glow
Your stealth like a snake
Grins upon the prey
And cheerfulness prone high upon the plateau
Is marking its victims
It will blow away

The smile you confess
Is bursting intensely
You think your happiness
Is a weapon against me

I know how bitter this sounds
My heart shriveled and scarlet
But I’ll load up the rounds
And still hold up the target

And had I known it would come to this
The shells of my love
My heart now in peril
Where the bullet and the bull’s-eye kiss
I’d have holstered my arms
Just to stare down your barrel

The hunters I’ve confronted
I was with their deadly vow
I came upon the hunted
And I am with them now
I am with them now.
