Ode to Silence

Post by witty_owl »

With reference to other discussions on this topic, I offer, for those interested a piece of non-poetry from one of the "lousy little poets".
This is a response to my journeys into the wilderness of Oz.

Ode to Silence

Shivering in the mist, dreaming on the boards.
Scratchings of unseen creatures, the clamour of the hordes.
Ghostly visions fading, retreat into the night.
Hypnotic boobook's haunting cry, gone with silent flight.

Silver trunks snd swirling fog, pale grey early light.
Granite sentinels indistinct, from a glistening carpet white.
Icy cold invades my bones and short is my steaming breath.
Tenacious, enduring snow gums, life defying death.

Here I come in solitude, amid the crags and peaks.
Immersed in nature's mystery where her song of silence speaks.
The elements severe and raw, test mind and body all.
The hidden treasure to be won is nourishment for the soul.

The energy abiding here can crush you like a bug
Or lift you up and fill you up or stone you like a drug.
The power and the beauty rolls right over you
And leaves your spirit strong and still or wipes you from the view.

Wilderness or pristine space, call it what you will.
Timeless land or natural place, where waters rush and spill
Out of the frozen enmity into the green below.
It winds its way unheard unseen; the serpent of the rainbow.

J.W. 1997.

Those members who know my music will be familiar with this lyric so this is for the more recent contributors to these forums.

Cheers, Witty Owl.

What a vivid picture you have painted! And so atmospheric. Great song.

Yes, Witty ~

I, for one, am familiar, and I 'still' :) love its truth and its beauty.

Worthy of the title, Ode.
Thanks for 'rehearsing' it again.
