Mighty Shield

Mighty Shield

I want you to know I surrendered everything

you claimed to be searching after.

I gave up every rhyme, every song I had to sing

eliciting either unintentional praise, or laughter.

And now life is more desperate, though I have kept every vow

that would turn misery away, make our hunger yield.

I would have been there, but I did not know how

to harness my pain, and fashion from it a mighty shield.

I want you to realize the nature of the situation

that led me to a betrayal of every fact.

I longed for peace, escape from endless accusations

I only became aware of when I turned my back.

But now life is more desperate, strange and unknown

in both the wretched city and burgundy field.

And if it all goes wrong, you will not be alone

though I will not offer my hand, or any mighty shield.

If I sound ambivalent, or I sound harsh and cold,

please forgive it as just another song.

I know you were aware of my position, I did as I was told

assured I was correct, too proud to admit I was wrong.

Times have changed, but you haven’t at all,

you remain unaware of any magic left to wield.

My God, I will not allow you to fall,

and if you choose, I will bear for you a mighty shield.

Hi J ~

Your descriptions of relationships ~ functional, dysfunctional, committed in the face of anything ~ are unique in the words you choose, and real in what they represent. I always look forward to reading what you've written.
