Some lyrics

Post by vern.silver »

A friend and I were sharing an apartment and he had just returned from visiting his fiance who was away at school. He was quite depressed, and as we sat talking, and drinking a beer, I wrote this song for him to give to her:
How Can I Ever Say Goodbye
Now you’re here / And I have forgotten / All the things I planned to say
I find myself watching you / And I feel a tear come to my eye / There’s no time
To let these moments / Get away from us / These precious moments
Are so few for us / Soon I must be on my way.
At one point I became interested in Louis Lamour westerns - they are an easy read when on a night shift. I think I read everything that was available at that time. I ended up writing a 'western song' though I have never been a cowboy, gunfighter and never killed anyone.
I Ride The Dark Trails
I am a cowboy a gun quick to my hand / I’m on my own now ‘cause I killed a man
I ride the dark trails with a price on my head / When people see me they talk of my dead
In the lines from the following song, I used Darlene to rhyme with 17, there was no broken down cadillac, and I have never used drugs. It is fiction:
When I turned seventeen I made love to Darlene / in the back of an old broken down Cadillac / we were stoned

Another friend of mine was having problems with his girl friend. I wrote this song along with him, getting him to 'help' with the lyrics. He found the process very helpful and cathartic.
You’re Talking Of Leaving*
You’re talking of leaving / You didn’t say why
When I held you last night / There were tears in your eyes
Please won’t you tell me / I will try to understand
"Clarence said a striking thing about rowing that I've always valued ... that he liked rowing because you were approaching life backward. You could clearly see the past, and you glanced quickly at the future over your shoulder.' Jim Harrison.
