Javier Mas question

Post by Johnnyboy »

Does anyone know what instrument he plays during the intro to "Who By Fire"? I think it is the laud, but I need to know for sure, because I'm writing a review. Help! Thanks in advance.

Hi Johnny ~

Perhaps you could put this quote of Anjani's from her Forum to good use, i.e. process of elimination on the instruments, since the laud is mentioned and you can eliminate the guitar  :
But one wonderful bit of news I can share is that Javier Mas will be handling the ethnic stringed instruments chair which includes acoustic guitar, bandurria, the laud and the archilaud. Some of you may be familiar with Javier's gorgeous tone and absolute mastery of these instruments from his work on the Spain tribute DVD, "According to Leonard Cohen." Javier was also the musical director for the project and he is a gem of a man and a devotee of Leonard's work.
Then, you could also Google/Wikipedia each of the instruments and compare them visually via the YouTube footage of "Who By Fire" ~ after freeze framing for comparison.

I'll let you do the rest. Good luck, Johnny. I know you don't want to call an instrument by its wrong name  .

Welcome to the Forum :D . Stop back with your review after you've finished.

Okay, I gave in. Here's one link, but not very clear... you can see the general shape and the size, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbkSy9iDA1s

This won't do you a lick o' good with your review, but it Is fun to watch Leonard's clear pleasure in Javier... and it could make you think Leonard is some kind of miracle worker with his own guitar  . After Everybody Knows, Who By Fire starts at about 6 minutes into it. You can save watching it until after you've gotten your review written, though.

It's the LAUD, Johnny.

This is what I asked, including thanking her ahead of time :D :
Which of the instruments does Javier use in his intro to Who By Fire?

. . .

Thanks. Someone on Leonard's Forum is writing a review and wanted to know if it's the laud.
I was very fortunate to get such a prompt response from Anjani on her Forum and this is what she quickly said:
the laud. he's such a lovely man. wonderful to see him again in LA.
If no one else has answered you privately on your question, I hope this reaches you in time.
