Detroit bar before the show

Post by disdat »

Do other Leonard Cohen fans want to meet at a bar before the Detroit show? I did this for the Tom Waits show in Columbus last year and met a lot of people who had flown in from around the country, and I'm guessing something similar might happen for a Leonard Cohen show. In a previous post someone recommended the Centaur, which is right around the corner from the Fox and happens to specialize in martinis. That sounds great to me, but I'm open to suggestions.

I had this idea in another thread:

"I just got off the phone with HockeyTown Cafe right next to The Fox in Detroit.

Basically I want to take a head count to see who may be interested in going to eat and drink before the show there.

The woman was very nice. She said if you come before 5pm there should be no problems getting seats. They only take reservations for 8 or more.

But if we want to have a big group of us, for 20-30 or more people, they will fit us in an upstairs VIP room along the lines of the meet up for Van Morrison last year.

She said they don't take these reservations after 5pm. I told her 4:30pm sounded good to me. I like to get there early then go to the venue at least 45 mins before the show starts to find my seat and buy stuff. And I know some of you may need to arrive late or leave early for your "will call" tickets.

I didn't book anything yet. She told me to take a head count here if I can and get back to her by the end of April.

Some friends are driving me and there will be three or four of us but I'm the only one going to the show so far. If I have no takers here, then we'll just get our own table. But I'd like the more fans, the merrier, if possible."

Hi Walsh and Disdat ~

I don't know the HockeyTown from the Centaur, but I'd like to be included... and sure hope Diana and her friend would, too... since our plan is to eat first, anyway.

Diana?

Hey, I was at that Waits show! Which bar? Did we meet? I was the guy who was suddenly desperate for a ticket when his buddy from NYC missed his flight.

I drove home from Montreal after the 3 Cohen concerts, got clean underwear and then drove to Columbus. I would have seen more Waits shows but Cohen got in the way :-)

A buddy and I will be driving in for the show so, let's do this!

Cheers,

Lizzy,

HTC is maybe less than five steps right next to The Fox itself.

Centaur is a few blocks down the street from The Fox. They serve ritzy dishes like lamb chops and caviar. As the OP pointed out, it's a smaller upscale martini type bar.

There's also The Town Pump literally right across the street from Centuar and owned by the same people. A regular bar that is a favorite of my uncle and his roadie/stage hand crew. It's a little bigger than Centuar but still fills up quick.

HTC as the title may tell, is a sports bar with like two or three floors to it. Big menu as well.

http://www.hockeytowncafe.com/dynamic.a ... ive%20Menu (as you can see they list all the prices right on the menu)

http://www.centaurbar.com/food.html (no prices listed but this stuff no doubt is expensive)

http://www.thetownpumptavern.com/Details.html (only lists Happy Hour Specials. not a very detailed site)

By the way, on the main page of HTC's site you'll see a box that says "area event listings" or something like that in the middle to bottom of the page. In that pic you can see the glowing red sign of The Fox right next to HTC itself. That should help show you just how close they are to each each other.

Between its proximity, its prices, and its variety of selections, it seems to me that HTC would be the better, all-around deal. Easier to pick up the will-call tickets, relax, and get to the show in plenty of time to browse and buy.

I'll wait to hear from Diana on this, as well.

We will have an announcement on Monday that may have an effect on these plans. Wait for it before deciding where to have a pre-concert meetup (the same with all other concerts).

Hi all,

Well, this isn't sounding very good and I now have a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Assuming all will be okay, I'll throw my 2 cents worth in here. Yes, meetup is a great idea! Lizzy, we have no problem with that at all. Lisa knows downtown much much better than I do and she also agrees that the Centaur would be good. Hockeytown tends to get really noisy. Another idea might be the State Bar and Grill which is just a block away next to the Fillmore. However, I guess we all had better wait until tomorrow.......

Diana

ps...I just edited this because maybe it is some good news! Jarkko has certainly taught me a lot of patience in the past year!

Hi Ken!

It will be good to see you again....this time with a ticket! And I'm sure it won't be nearly as cold as outside the Beacon ;-)

Oh, no! Or, oh, yes! Is this you, Ken... who I took to the lobby of the Beacon Hotel, to meet up with Diana? If so, I am SO SO happy to see that you have a ticket, and am looking forward to your seeing Leonard!

An announcement on Monday to not just us, but all concert-goers, at least presumably in North America!?! I'm baffled to say the least... however, I won't give in to any feelings of foreboding :D . I refuse.

Good to know that you're 'with us' on the plans, Diana... as I really really believed you would be, anyway. Noisy is NOT good... so, perhaps, another spot would be best. Pending the outcome of Jarkko's announcement, of course.

Hi Lizzy,

I'm going to trust Jarkko on this one. At first my stomach sank, but then reread his message about 50 times to see how he worded it and I'm going to try and remain positive overnight. The strange thing is that this is the only thread he posted on, although it involves all meetups for this upcoming tour. Usually he would create a new thread but perhaps because we were doing most of the talking about a meetup. Oh heck, I don't know. We will see tomorrow!

All the best,
Diana

Hi Diana ~

Yeah, I figure if I have to deal with something negative or disappointing, I'll have to deal with it soon enough... no need to add to it before it even gets here. Otherwise, it's just another Jarkko surprize, of one kind or another. That's what I'll go with until I know otherwise.

Hmmm, Paul. Good observation, which could suggest merely a change of venue, so why to make plans, especially with the bar/restaurant itself, when you may end up in an entirely different neighbourhood. This is the U.S., after all  ... its being the Midwest U.S. only adds to that.
