su soldado

Post by piñata heart »

su soldado

let us go to spain.
we'll have a fine place
on the promenade,
and i'll bring you oranges
from the marketplace.

and at night,
armed with only my guitar,
i will brave the
pulsing avenidas.
singing my pitiful songs,
passing a withered hat,
and looking into the eyes
of a ragged dawn.

and i'll come home with wine,
my fingers bleeding
and badly calloused,
but you shall never want
for anything.

Hi P.H.,

I love the sentiment of this poem... it valiantly strums all my most romantic chords...

In doing the romantic threads I've been doing, it has me thinking there is an art to life as a kind of romance... this has a humor embedded in it too, since life can be so hostile to such a notion... and yet, to be a silly idiot... holding out a flower to one's beloved when those around you would rather deck you instead... there's something deeply touching about it... (I'm not saying this is you in this poem, actually, since there is no opposition here... well, except that implied by the bleeding fingers... which is just the harshness of the world I guess... the needing to make a living in spite of one's romantic tendencies.. which is itself romantic, come to think of it)...

... anyway, thank you for posting this, P.H...

... oh, and I mean a silly idiot in the best sense, P.H., in the most endearing way, I mean, in case I need to point that out... oh, and I'm speaking to the idea of all romantics, not just you... (myself included)...

I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Violet. The inspiration comes from Neruda, one of my absolute favorites. There’s such ferocity in his work and that’s what I was aiming for here (not that I could ever hold a candle to him).

Thanks for the kind words…it means everything to me.

Your poem is rich and flavourful, Pinata. I can feel the sunshine and smell the salt air. So natural, beautiful, and full of love.

I can't thank you enough, Lizzy. With your permission, I think I'll start calling you and Violet the Sisters of Mercy. Your kindness is unmatched.

Fondly,

It was, my dear Violet, but we must be careful. We don't want to upset Georges. ;-)

... yes, and if his lordship returns -- Lord M. --- you probably don't even know about him -- but if he does, you can't imagine what these triangles or quadrangles can lead to... (Georges once even, well, killed me with a mallet in a Lady of Mallot like sequence)... so you're very right about being careful...

... okay, let's pretend I never mentioned any of that...

Sincerely,

yours in the trade (writing that is),

My dearest Violet,

It won’t make me jealous if I hear that you’ve sweetened their nights…you can still bring me comfort and songs.

Yours always,

... yes, it looks like we'll have to stick to the comfort and song part... Georges is just waking up I see, and he can be awfully cranky just about now... so...

... okay, gotta run, ph --
