What concerts have you been to lately?

Post by Paula »

In the absence of Leonard touring I have had to look elsewhere for live music. I saw Bruce Springstein a couple of months ago but that was only because it was only five minutes away otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. I am not a great fan.

Anyway David Gray is doing a concert in Trafalgar Square on Sunday and I am taking my packed lunch and going. Should be good.

What concerts have you been to lately or who have you seen live before?

The last concert I have been to, a month or two ago, was (and I'm not kidding here, folks): Iron Maiden!

Realy!

I was a fan when I was 13, and I never saw them live, so when I heard they'll be playing, I asked another ex-fan if he wants to go. It was supposed to be a joke, but he said -Yeah.
- Seriously? - says I.
- Yeah.
- That might be fun...

...and it was. There were five of us (our friends that we talked into it) and a bunch of mad satanists with dead skulls on their t-shirts. We all screamed: "kill! die! hail satan!", and such, when it was due.

We got very drunk, so I don't remember any details. I only remember it was fun.

Now let me think.......................
Over the last year we have seen Simon and Garfunkel, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd.
Will be seeing Pink Floyd again in a couple of weeks time and also Buddy Holly later next month. We declined the opportunity to see the Beatles this coming October.

I think I had better rewrite this..........
Over the last year we have seen the Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel, the Counterfeit Stones and Floydian Slip.
Will be seeing Off the Wall in a couple of weeks time and also Buddy Holly and the Cricketers. We declined the opportunity to see the Cavern Beatles this coming October (although have seen the Bootleg Beatles)

All these tribute bands/artistes sound very close to the real thing....some sound uncannily real.

As regards real musicians.. Moody Blues, Mike Oldfield and Sisters of Mercy..but about 5 years ago. I did want to see Roger Waters but thought the ticket prices a tad expensive.
Have seen my brother's band..Dr Hasbeen. He sometimes supports Hawkwind and a few weeks ago, in Blackpool, Dave Brock sang in my brother's band then my brother joined Hawkwind when they came on stage. Arthur Brown is presently guesting with Hawkwind and will be doing some gigs with his own band.. I would love to see him again. Am also planning to try to catch Caravan in action.

Some of you here will not have the faintest idea about these people...where were you in the 70's? :D

I'm afraid the 70's were a bit of of a blur, that was the era of home brewed beer and wine before the children came along

I did see Paul Simon last year and still have the 1st LP of his I bought, the Paul Simon Song book back in the 60's. Also have to admit having a really good night out seeing Status Quo about 2 years ago

I think there's some kind of jinx about as the last 2 events I bought tickets for were cancelled this year. :(

The Crazy World of Arthur Brown  - I saw a programme recently and he was on it he said the burning helmet  he had to wear contributed to his baldness.

I have never heard of your brother's band Pete but if he is good enough to support Hawkwind it must be an OK band. Can I have his autograph

Margaret I would have liked to see Paul Simon was he good. I had the misfortune to see Art Garfunkal and bearing in mind the only song I can remember him doing solo was "Bright Eyes" the concert was a bit of a let down and I had to sit in the Gods at the Albert Hall I was clinging on to the seat for dear life thru most of his performance.

Jurica a girl at work is a massive fan of Iron Maiden she is a bit of a Goth.

I have just remembered the most recent "concert" I was at. I was walking near a mobile phone shop and they were have a promotion and they had Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate singing on the pavement. The kids only knew him from the soundtrack of the "The Full Monty" but he was really good. I felt a bit sorry for him playing to shoppers on a Saturday afternoon he would have done better at Butlins.

Paula,

Paul Simon was brilliant. I saw him at a smallish venue holding about 2000 people, a marquee at the Kings Dock in Liverpool on the banks of the Mersey. The audience loved him and wouldn't allow him to leave until he did about 10 encores and everbody was totally exhausted. He had some of the musicians from the Graceland era backing him and they were all excellent. He seemed really amazed at the enthusiasm of the Liverpool audience. I never thought he needed Garfunkle!

I saw a review of a current tour by Bob Dylan a couple of weeks ago and the critic wasn't at all impressed. Dylan appeared so disinterested and couldn't care less whether he was there or not. If his heart wasn't in it perhaps he should give up touring. I've heard others who attended recent concerts say they were disappointed too.

A couple of years ago I arranged a girls day out, we went up to Cardiff and saw Sting, he was superb. My friends only came because they wanted a day out but after the concert they were converted! It was a fabulous day the best weather of the year, an outdoor concert in the grounds of the castle, and one of the best live concerts I have ever heard.

I saw B.B. King last week. He was amazing. It is always great to see a living legend.

This has been an excellent year of great concerts here in Helsinki.
During the summer I went to two memorable gigs at our Olympic Stadium: The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. This week we saw Carlos Santana and Bob Dylan will be here in October. And we have
skipped a number of other big names (like David Bowie, Robbie Williams and several rock bands)!

Speaking of tribute bands, as Pete was, the last concert I went to was Paul McCartney at the NEC. Apparently he refused for years to do any old Beatles numbers for fear of turning into the ultimate Beatles tribute band, but on the last tour he finally felt secure enought to add a few to the playlist. As the Beatles didn't tour in support of the later albums, in some cases it was the first time he had sung them since they were recorded. He had a very good support band that reproduced the 'retro' sound perfectly and they did a lot of old Wings songs too. Everyone had a good old singalong, but the special moment for me was after the first set of encores. Paul came out on his own with just his guitar, picking out the opening notes of Yesterday, and the entire audience stood and sang it with him. I had had doubts whether I wanted to go and see an ageing rock star relive his former glory, but I was very glad I did. 'Makka' was 62 going on 26, and was superb throughout the show.

We also saw Sting a couple of years ago and were very impressed, and we have seen Chris de Burgh a couple of times. He does a lot of open-air concerts where folks take along a picnic and sit on the grass. All very relaxed and informal - takes me back to the 6th form, wandering around barefoot on the grass through a haze of grass-smoke at a T Rex gig in the local park. (These days I have to take a chair and a blanket  ).

The last concert I attended was one with my own band "The Leonard Cohen Event", it was great, especially the leadsinger is very handsome, huge muscles you know, and he is just as warm and wonderful a singer as Mr Cohen himself.

"The Leonard Cohen Event" is giving concert on monday 1.sep at Kulturgyngen in Aarhus, denmark, be there(please!)
