As Canadians know, Prime Minister Harper has axed funding to the Arts and made disparaging remarks about artists. Canadian artists, already very worried about his policies, have banded together here to prevent his re-election on October 14. Become a Minister Without Portfolio! Please JOIN THEM.

This probably isn't funny if you're not Canadian, but it had me in tears.

harper is a philistine?
harper seems to be a philistine if his lacklustre response to novelist yann martel is a guide.

i guess i'm an intellectual snob - i'd like politicians to be reasonably erudite.
the current uk prime minister david cameron went to one of the best schools in the world - eton college - and subsequently to oxford university but i've rarely heard him indicate any deep connection to intellectual life.
perhaps he prefers to keep those interests hidden (if he has them) in case it alienates `ordinary people`.
compare and contrast with prime minister gladstone - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/colu ... books.html
