What other music do you like?

I have seen a coupe of votes for Eminem (horror!), and thought it might be fun to devote a whole thread to saying what other music we like. Sorry if this has been done before.

For my part, my favourites - after Leonard Cohen - are Blondie and The Stranglers. In each case, their stuff from the late '70s. I rather like punky stuff from that sort of time, but I think it must appeal to a different part of me to that which likes Leonard Cohen.

Anyone else?

I am not sure if The Stranglers were very popular outside England. ANd they probably don't have many fans on a Leonard Cohen forum. They are musically very different, although The Stranglers were reasonably intelligent lyrically, compared with many of their time.

My favorite group is the Rascals. They were an American group from the late 60's and early 70's who had some great hits, including "People Got to Be Free", which is probably their most famous song. Their music is very different than Leonard's, but somehow they both have put together bodies of music that resonate in my soul. Felix Cavaliere was their main creative force, and his songs are full of hope and longing - as if they were the flip side of Leonard's songs. The messages complement each other in the most inredible way. It amazes me how I can be attracted so strongly to such diverse musical styles, but I definitely am.

Currently hanging round my CD player:
Norah Jones- superlatives are inadequate
Muse - a class above any other rock band
White Stripes - beauty in simplicity(the antithesis of TNS)
Martha Wainwright - say no more
The Coral - patchy but sublime at best
Coldplay - The Scientist is musical perfection
James Taylor - still nobody sings them better
and absolutely no sign whatsoever of The Walkabouts.

lechehombre - The Rascals most famous record in England was "Groovin" it is the only one I know of theirs a summer of love song.

Rhodes - I wasn't really into the Stranglers they were a different era to me but I liked "Golden Brown" an ode to Heroin.

Heretic - Norah Jones has an amazing voice and her dad is Ravi Shanka which itself is quite amazing

stuff I'm listening to lately:

Tindersticks, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Calexico, Lucinda Williams, Richard Thompson - all have released CDs this year that I think are their best, combining all the influences of their previous recordings, and I've seen great live performances from all bar WGC (who haven't toured the UK yet!) this year too;

Walkabouts (and Chris and Carla), Sparklehorse, Vic Chesnutt, bands I haven't seen live this year yet (Sparklehorse next Saturday though!), and bands whose music means a lot to me;

Tom McRae, Be Good Tanyas, James Yorkston & The Athletes - all good, young artists only an album or two into their careers, and my answer to anyone who says there's no good new music;

Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Neil Young, Robbie Robertson/The Band, Nick Drake - old favourites, enough said;

The Clash/Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - only discovering the Clash now really, my belated tribute to the late Joe Strummer, who I was lucky enough to see in his adopted home town of Bridgewater last year, a few weeks before his untimely death;

Norah Jones - just to establish a point of agreement with ...er, Heretic, in contrast to the Walkabouts... one similarity between NJ and the Walkies is that they've both covered Nick Drake songs (see also Lucinda Williams, Calexico...), so they've both got good taste...

oh, and lots more! (did I mention Diana Krall??)

Don't worry mate you're not alone I thought the Stranglers were brill (and still do) they were far and away the most musical & lyrical punk band.
