Listening Frequency

I wonder if I am just obsessive or whether there are a lot of members who spend two plus hours daily connected to the LC experience.

Myself, I am listening in my home, in my car, at work!!!

What about the rest of the group?

I probably listen to about an hour of LC a day, mostly in the car. I find some of his songs especially fun to turn way up and sing along with in the car. Closing Time is a favorite. As is So Long Marianne- I try to sing the "and"s inbetween the verses- not so easy to do while concentrating on the road. lol

I also listen to LC when I run. I am constantly training myself in a mile sprint and the length of some songs are perfect for it- Democracy, Waiting for the Miracle...

You are not obsessive at all. I've found that a lot of people listen in the car, whereas I like to listen when on the computer, just surfing. Headphones are great for some songs (Waiting for the Miracle) - they just bring out his voice better. Master Poems, as well. Two hours a day is not 'too much'. It's perfectly 'fine'.

PS: I've got 'Closing Time' down pat. I can sing the 'ands' in between the verses - not very pretty, but it can be done.

Nice to know I have company!

My only critic is my 16 year old, (who is determined to be a rock star).....he says I am "killing" LC's songs by overplaying. He's particularly troubled because I play " Never Any Good" EVERY MORNING while I take him to school while he tries to hid behind his IPod. His preference, which he articulates often, would be to turn the CD player off!

My favs change every few days.. but I always come back to "Anthem", "Midnight Lady" and "Everybody Knows".....and yes, I do turn the volume up VERY HIGH and sing along in the car! At work, LC is great background, particularly since the songs are imbedded in my subconsious!!!

Can't wait for the tour!

I think most of us can say that our faves change daily. Which brings us back to the point that LC is NOT a depressing artist. Unless we're all so depressed we can't see it. Ah, yes. Turn your little iPod dweller into an LC lover right now, lest he wander into the slums of 'hip hop'.

At this moment I have 103 Leonard Cohen songs on my MP3 player (nothing else) and I listen to them at least a few hours every day, wherever I go and whatever I do. Even if I do the washing or read the news, drive to town or write a letter. I will never, ever get tired of his voice or his songs. If this is an obsession or an addiction .... well then, how wonderful my life is with his precious music so near to me. Today I've enjoyed listening a few times to "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Joan of Arc" and "Master Song". Beautiful, beautiful, always.

I wonder if the fans who listen more are newer fans like me? I'm fairly recent to Leonard Cohen really only since last Summer. My youngest daughter always turns Leonard off when she climbs into the car. We normally find either a CD or song on the radio that we both like. My older daughter is not so bad, she'll listen to Leonard and not complain. I can't listen to Leonard all the time though, I have to take a break from him, that way if I play him again it sounds new again and I like the different perspective that I get. I've also found that some songs that I hadn't previously liked have become favourites for the day / week which is kind of strange.

There was a time, not so very long ago, when I could listen to nothing but Leonard. But, life happened, and it went on to sour even my love of Leonard for a short while. Glad that's gone. Still, when I listen to LC, I listen to him exclusively, I can't put say... a Stones song between Anthem and FBR.

This concert in Glastonbury has me a little nervous as it's supposed to be geared to a 'younger' crowd. How will this younger crowd take Leonard? I think he needs to start with a triumph. But, being the man he is, a shaky start may not faze him. As we all know, we are just waiting to find out for ourselves.

I've downloaded all of LC music directly into my brain.I don't need a cd player or i pod to hear him.After listening to LC for almost 40 years I can replay any of his songs word for word inside my head anytime I want.And I probably do so daily.

Lucky you. I could recall (at one time), the lyrics, and 'hear him', in a way, but not the same way you're speaking of, I don't think. TM would likely be helpful in that mode.

http://www.last.fm may be a site that you would find useful. It documents what artists you play and how many times you play certain songs and so on. If anyones interested, this is mine

LastFm informs me that between the 21 and 27th of January, I listened to Leonard Cohen 492 times. Assuming an average track length of 4 minutes, thats 1968 minutes or 32.8 hours. So that comes to 4.6 hours of Cohen every day. Thats actually quite startling, but I do remember that I didnt listen to anything but Cohen that week. What a brilliant week.

I will def. check out that site and see how the whole thing works. One thing I've noticed about my listening habits with Leonard, is that he's never 'background music'. He's always center stage. Maybe that's why I usually listen to the radio in the car. Otherwise, I might just get lost in thought. And traffic. 4.6 hours a day. I'd say that was one very brilliant week.

Frankly I just burn cds for the various places I happen to be.

BTW I just listened to the Phil Spector/LC collaberation for the first time. My interest lasted about 5 seconds...it is just so "grotesque", as LC has said.

That's the reaction of a lot of people, but with repeated listening they enjoy the album. Leonard, of course, didn't have a whole lot to say about it. There's a few tunes off that that I don't mind, but no, not a fave. That's something Spector should have done time for.

The ability to play music on the site is a secondary function. The main point of the site is that you download a program called a scrobbler which then documents the songs you listen to on the computer as you would normally do. It then builds up charts and so on.

There are other functions like listening to songs by artists and even a "radio" of friends which plays songs regularly played by the friends you build up on the site, but these are more discovering new artists than listening to old ones.
