the quest

Post by tom.d.stiller »

This is a song I've been working on lately. I'd like to dedicate it to Elizabeth who helped me a lot on the long way from the first draft to the current version. Thank you for that, my friend. All improvements are yours, while the weaknesses remain forever mine.

Submitting this, I found out that it is post #250.

Tom

the quest

rain beats down the highway
the sun shines on our back
our colors seek the rainbow
at the end of the track

as we walk along
through the mud and the mire
heading for the golden fleece
or the funeral pyre

we were dead
before we started
our cause initially lost
we never calculated
the suffering
or the cost

mystic smiles shine from our lips
we're bent toward utopian skies
as we walk on we never wipe
the tears from our eyes

hurt is our companion
desperation is all we see
we are but small in number
in a world of misery

crying "one for all
and all for one"
like ancient musketeers
on the winding road
to paradise
we overcome our fears

with truth our only weapon
and hope our only shield
the scars are scarcely covered
our wounds have never healed

loneliness our brother
pain our devoted friend
our minds are bent on freedom though
we'll get there in the end

we are frail
we are fragile
but we'll jump into the final fray
at the foot
of the rainbow
still uncounted miles away

and side by side
we'll cross the bridge
made of colored light
hand in hand
we'll leave behind
our eternal fight

with truth as our weapon
and hope as our shield
engulfed by desperation
to which we'll never yield

A wonderful song of love and hope, Tom. Thank you for the dedication. I see many excellent lines, and a few changes, unrelated to me, but thank you for such gracious and magnanimous [undeserved] credit. I like to think that one day I may actually hear you play and sing it.
