Leonard Cohen at Glastonbury Festival 2008?

Following on from the snippet in The Times earlier this week, which mentioned Leonard Cohen as a possible performer at this year's Glastonbury Festival, Channel 4's teletext music news (page 341) this morning claims that two separate sources have informed them that LC will appear at Glastonbury on Saturday, 28th June 2008.

Being unfamiliar with the Glastonbury Festival, I googled it. Seems there are some hoops to jump through to gain admittance. Here is an extract -

As part of his continuing campaign to combat touting, Michael Eavis has confirmed that if you want to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2008, you will first have to register. He explained, "I want to keep up the momentum we gathered last year by stopping ticket touting altogether - thank you for being so supportive of our registration process, which is after all quite tedious. I appreciate it so much".

The 2008 registration process is very similar to last year’s award winning system, which involved supplying your contact details and a passport standard photo. Everyone, including children aged 13 and over, who wants to buy tickets will need to register first to be eligible to go through the sales procedure on 6th April. Each ticket sold will feature a photograph of the person in whose name it is registered and will be non-transferable, so if you plan to buy tickets for friends or family, make sure they all register.

The registration period has been extended from the previously advertised closing date. You can now register anytime between 9am on Friday, 1st February, 2008, until midnight on Friday, 14th March 2008, either online or by completing a registration form. There will be no further extension beyond this date, so if you miss the 14th March deadline, you will not be able to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2008

That sounds like an improvement on past years when it's been very hard to get tickets.

However, Glastonbury is (in)famous for huge crowds camping out in a sea of muddy fields for 3 days! I think I prefer to buy a ticket in a proper sit down concert hall. If the report of Leonards performance there is true and being televised, that's great news

The BBC have covered recent Glastonbury Festivals and last year footage from the various performers was broadcast on BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four.

Plus you could press your red interactive button and watch selected artists' sets throughout the weekend.

I'd recommend retreating to your sofa with a gin & tonic rather than venturing to Somerset...

I will do that! I know that past footage has been screened by the good old BBC. I'm not sure if I have an "interactive button " though! It's just nice to know that there's a possibility of LC headlining at such an event.

Damellon, reading your post all I could think was that the British must be such a cooperative lot because there would be a riot here if any festival attempted to put this sort of system in place.

the fact he's considering venues like this bodes well for the chance to see him. while those small theaters would be perfect it's going to be hard to fit in everyone who wants to attend.

Damellon, reading your post all I could think was that the British must be such a cooperative lot because there would be a riot here if any festival attempted to put this sort of system in place.

He can do it because it is a seller's market. I went through the registration process last year, providing photo ID etc, and still failed to win the lottery for a ticket. There are at least four times as many applicants as tickets. So he can make whatever rules he likes.

I don't think this is a good venue for Leonard, because the music played is very eclectic: many listeners will be there to hear much more raucous stuff. For Leonard, it could be like the Isle of Wight in 1970 again.

I agree with you Hydroit. I have never been to Glastonbury but watch snippets on the box. I am not sure it is the best venue in the world for Leonard especially if it is pissing down.

I'm glad to see it's not just me who will need a chair to sit in to listen to Leonard. I'm way past sitting comfortably in a field of mud.
If I'm going to have to fly to the other side of the world I want a chair at the other end. Please hear me Leonard!

I'm 50 this year and looking forward to Getting my Glastonbury ticket in April. As a lowly teaching assistant I can't afford to go to many gigs throughout the year so this is my one chance to have a choice of over 200 artists in one weekend. I started going in the 90s when my kids nagged me into taking them and have been back every year since, though the youngsters don't go any more.
I really can't think of a better venue for my first live experience of LC.

Just got to re-iterate what the 50 year old said. I'm 54 and have recovered from many an illness.

If it means getting on down and wallowing in the mud with 'Laughing Lenny' then so be it. I haven't seen him since 1979 so any minor discomfort is worth it.
