...the show was moving and fantastically impressive.
It brings it all back... again and again.

Thank you, Diane, for recording that for me. I'll enjoy it immensely! "Fantastically impressive" ~ it's hard to find words to match his energy and bigger-than-life presence and body language, which are not overdone, but exactly on target with his messages and intent. We still search for the best, the most correct, words. Oh... to be able to see him again doing this concert!

One of the two women I met who flew over from Hong Kong, to attend both weekends, this one originally from Australia, said that of ALL the concerts she's EVER seen, this one was the best ~ all around, simply the best! Everything about it was right on! I agreed with Bruce's politics on Katrina, as well, so there was no dissonance for me, at all.

So anyone looking for a back-to-back set of E Street Band classics like Born To Run and Dancing In The Dark would have walked away empty handed - but not disappointed.

That's because The Boss has moved on and so have his fans.

What hasn't changed, however, is the raw brilliance of the man.

His voice is still pitch perfect - with the trademark husky growl that demands to be listened to.

And his band played as if it was an extension of Springsteen himself, who acted like a guitar-playing conductor.

Springsteen also had something to say through his anti-war preambles.

He slated President George Bush for his handling of the New Orleans disaster and dedicated How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live? to the city's destitute.

In all, the show was moving and fantastically impressive.
SO true! "President Bystander" was one of his references to G.B. in New Orleans. I am SO anxious to get a copy of this album. Does anyone know when the idea for recording it was conceived? Its content aligns so perfectly for Katrina victims.

Lizzytysh....the liner notes has the history of how he came to record it and also a brief history of each of the songs (the earliest version of Froggie went a courtin' is from 1549  ).

In brief Springsteen contributed 1 song (We Shall Overcome) to a Seeger tribute album in 1997 and in the process got interested enough in him to buy an armful of Seeger records to listen to. Thus was the Seeger Sessions conceived. And he also mentions somewhere that he wanted to update the arrangements/tempo so that the songs could live on in the 21st century as Seeger did for his generation of listeners with his 5 string banjo.

Thanks for that info, Kush. When I get the cd, I'll be able to read all that. Life's inexplicable, inimitable timing, I guess.

Lizzy, one could spend a lifetime searching for the most appropriate superlatives to describe Springsteen live, but it would all be in vain, as you now know 8) .

You are welcome on the copy of the bbc concert (let's hope my memory doesn't fail this time). When you get the new cd, there is a dvd on the other side, in which Bruce explains more about his inspiration to make the album. Importantly, The Seeger Sessions was recorded live, and not mixed and polished to hell in a studio to squeeze out the cracks and the light. This is what he says on the dvd about creating music live (I liked it so much I wrote it down):
"You get the sound of music being made and not just played. When you're fumbling around, that's the moment when opportunity and disaster are close at hand. If you can push it to opportunity, you know, you get something really special."
I think that the fact this album is live is what makes it so good. Or maybe that's just stating the obvious...

Yes, Diane, you're right. Superlatives fail me. I saw Bruce years ago, when he first started out ~ of course, intense-beyond-belief-high-energy and "Yes," I had to concede he was great at what he did, but his style wasn't really mine... still some songs struck me through the years and I really really liked them. Then, came Devils and Dust and I listened to cuts from it and to interviews with him. Mind opened more toward him. Then, the album cover and the cut from this album that Kush provided the link for... already half way home, just with the cover, as it speaks so loudly to what this album in like; and the cut confirmed it. However, Live ~ a quantum leap with that! Sold, sold, and resold again. I'll take two 8) ! One to have extra, just in case! What I wouldn't give for a Live recording of his full, Jazzfest performance... I sure wish someone from this Forum would see him perform on this tour in Europe. Of course, as a follow-up on that, I wish that someone would be me, but aside from that, I want others to see this dynamic, soulful, heart-filled performance! I love that quote and he's so right 8) .

Love,
Lizzy

Hi Lizzy, I've seen Springsteen live four times and I hope to see him again, hopefully with the full E Street Band. It would have been great to see him this time too, but it wasn't to be.

Here's the link to the bbc radio2 page with an hour's audio footage, plus a 20 minute video excerpt. It'll be up for seven days:

Enjoy,

Diane
