Re: Listening Frequency
Interesting. I, for one, am leery about downloading such programs. Even 'music players' that people have on their blogs. I think in a case like this, people would be more interested in just hearing LC's music non-stop. The extraneous 'new' songs of friends, may be an impediment, when one wants to hear the 'old' songs of one particular artist.

I dont think I explained this properly.linda_lakeside wrote:Interesting. I, for one, am leery about downloading such programs. Even 'music players' that people have on their blogs. Most people have some kind of audio player on the computer, could be Windows Media Player, Real Player, iTunes, Winamp, whatever. All the scrobbler does is collect the info about what music has been played on those audio players on the computer. The music that you chose to play on the computer will be documented and charted online on your personal page.
But on LastFM, they also have a radio functionality where if you want to, you can listen to a collection of your friends music online or the radio of a certain artist. For example, if you turn on the Leonard Cohen radio, you will get a random selection of Cohen songs playing in a list.

Aha. I see, and that sounds like a more enjoyable 'listening' experience than I had originally imagined. I had meant to check out the links you left, but became entangled in other things. Thanks for the info, and I shall take a look.

Re: Listening Frequency
I listen to Leonard almost every day. Sometimes I have Cohen marathons where I listen to nothing but Leonard for many hours at a time. I line my favourite 5 albums up and put them on repeat. I also dip into his poetry several times a day. I have Master Poems on my mp3 player now which proves to be a most rewarding listening experience when I am laid in bed at night with no other worldly distractions. I am not obsessed with Leonard, I just prefer 'the power of art over trash, the triumph of magic over the brute' as Nabokov put it.

Re: Listening Frequency
I relate most to Jerry on page 1, in that all of Leonard's music is stored on my internal juke-box. I reckon that I would do pretty well , if I was tested spontaneously on any of his lyrics. I've always listened to Leonard in a specific way...I listen to his albums with no distractions from start to finish, and everyday when I first buy them (sometimes twice). This was especially the case with "Recent Songs" and "The Future" (which I played often twice a day for two months or more), but less so with "Ten New Songs" and "Dear Heather". Quite possibly it's because of the difference between analogue and digital. Otherwise, I treat Leonard's music like champagne or a favourite restaurant... I don't go there too often. Whole years have gone by when I haven't listened to him, but (perhaps because of this) his music is more important to me than ever. I've only had one marathon...that lasted about two weeks, when I played in sequence tapes of most of the Leonard concerts that I have attended. Actually I prefer live music to CD these days.

I do whole lps in my head. I don't need a player. Other than Cohen, I was doing Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks the other day. I read an article by a music critic who said that he didn't own any Beatles records as he could sing them all in his head.

Re: Listening Frequency
As I said earlier, the lyrics are easy to come by without a player, but it's the nuances of the band, the background singers, and all the little chatter that might go along with a recording that makes it 'whole'. I need a player for that. I can 'hear' him sing/say certain things without a player, but the thrill of actually hearing his voice add tonal inflection is something I cannot do. The lyrics alone, sure - like reciting an old poem, but to get the 'feeling' a player, for me, is best. I love headphones in the dark, as Mark said. Master Poems is great for that, as are some of his more 'sensual' lyrics.... "Light as a Breeze", being one, and his voice on "Waiting for the Miracle", I can't get the full 'quality' of without a player. I'm finding now, after having left the forum for a while, that my 'listening memory' is becoming hazy. I need it to be refreshed, so a player is the only option. Geez. It's almost like a drug. I've recently gone thru a version of withdrawal, I guess.
Much the same with reading his poetry. One might know the words, but to read them off the page, is like being there as he wrote. Well, off to get my fix now.

Re: Listening Frequency
Well lets see. There are times when I yearn to hear Leonards voice for several hours a day . That often includes the long drive on the way to work. I find freeway driving so much easier with Leonard in the car. I don't touch our albums anymore. They just sit on the bookcase. I never did have a record player that made them sound non crackely. I haven't figured out how to use an MP3 yet so I stilll have that pleasure to come.
Certain CD's we keep for the "bedroom" sorry guys but I'm not telling which ones. I don't want to shake my belief that LC wrote certain songs just for my man and me
Come to think of it, I remember discovering this forum a few years ago, getting really excited about finding like minded souls and I started reading some of the lyric interpretations. I didn't agree with some of the interpretations so decided it was better to keep my interpretations of the lyrics to myself.
Anyway, back to listening frequency... like some of the other posters, I have periods of time that are LC free. However I've still been known to hear a few bars of closing time playing in my head, even on non-Leonard days.

Hi All
I listen to Mr Cohen for at least two hours every day. To borrow his own words with little alteration... I've got him like a habit and I'll never get enough!

Well, I'm just a young 'un, but I was interested to read your comment. My useless talent (my husband thinks it's great but weird) is that I can remember the exact words to ANY song I listen too - whether or not I actually like it - after 2 or 3 listens, and then it's lodged forever in my brain (it's a great party piece!). Because I love LC and have been a fan for about 15 years - my teens - I can play the entire arrangement and harmonies in my head of all of his songs and sing along. Saves getting an iPod!

Re: Listening Frequency
Gee. That's not a 'useless' talent, that is an incredible talent. One that would be most helpful if you have to wait in a bus depot for hours on end, with no book, and no one to talk to. I think it's a terrific talent. You are a 'complete' person now. Still, there must be an awful lot going on in that noggin' of yours. It would be nice if you could get Jennifer Warnes to do harmony on oh, Tennessee Waltz? Or even, 'Don't Go Home with Your Hard-On"- you could get every 'angel' that ever sang with Leonard to harmonize on that one. Ha! 'Useless Talent', indeed! You are a walking gold mine. Could you play Light as The Breeze for Me, please? I think it deserves more play than it gets.
Thanks and good on you!
Linda.

Re: Listening Frequency
Thanks hon! that's really nice of you. It's a bit odd really - I just assumed until quite recently that everyone could do it! Sometimes embarrassing though as I sing along to some God-awful song (not LC!) and people assume I really like it as I know it so well...
I LOVE Light As The Breeze - one of my absolute favourites. Someone bought me the Billy Joel version years ago, and shoot me down in flames, I even like that.
